Wireless system questions?

So, for Christmas, I got an incredibly generous gift from my brother...a Sennheiser EW172 G3 wireless system. He said I can exchange it if there's something else I'd rather have, and I'm wondering about this particular model vs. the Line 6 Relay G50. Does anyone have any advice and real world experience with either/both? I'm mostly concerned with sound quality - digital vs. analog, compander or not, etc., with performance and reliability a close second. Also, I can't seem to find a stat for the range on the Sennheiser (operating range from the transmitter to receiver, not frequency range). I know that they eliminated a certain bandwith that wireless systems used to use last year, and you're not supposed to use them anymore...any chance of something like that happening again? Thank you for any advice!

First and foremost, congrats.

Secondly, look at the receiver it should let you know what frequency it's set at. If it's anywhere between 680-815 range, trade it in now. You can't use that range anymore.

Third, Sennheiser makes quality stuff, as does Shure. Hands down, pick those over Line 6. That being said, the Line 6 is pretty reliable, good sound, great range, uses digital frequencies, but some tone loss (which you will have to expect from wireless units.)

Re: Wireless system questions?

i've got the G30 and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to ANYONE!!!

Re: Wireless system questions?

Thanks for the replies, guys! Yeah, the frequency range is fine, it's a newer model, I'm just concerned that A)the FCC doesn't ban THIS range too, and B)wondering how far the effective range from the base is...as in, can you walk 100 or more feet away without a signal dropout?

Any other opinions? Thank you!

Don't worry about the FCC. I don't think they're going to claim anymore frequency ranges anytime soon. If they do, they'll give you a year of warning like they did previously. Regardless, 2-3 down the line if they do, then sell it on ebay/cl and buy a line 6 one. Problem solved.

IN terms of drop out, most should go close to 100 yards. When I used to own both a Shure and Line 6 I could go down my strreet and still be heard.

Truthfully, unless you're playing stadiums, huge stages for festivals, do you really need a wireless unit that can cover 100 ft/yrds? Realistically, any bar, small venue, club you will have a 30-50 foot range from the stage which is more than enough thats needed.

Moreover, you really don't want to play much further from your band. Reason being is "natural delay." Further you go, a slight delay will be added. THink sound systems in arenas/venues and even inhome theatres. You have to calibrate every speaker so theres a delay for the rear ones so they match up timing wise with the front.

Re: Wireless system questions?

Long story short, not knowing what you're using it for, where you're playing, etc I can almost guarentee it will more than suffice for all your needs. Do you own a buffer? You may want to consider adding ones esp if you have pedals as well.
