Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

I've been following a couple of recent threads that have addressed various series/parallel schemes for 3 single coil equipped guitars (thanks, Herby and Vinnie)... I've also looked through S-D and Fender schematics until my eyes bled but I'm not finding anything that will get me both standard 5 way Strat selection and then a 3 pickup series connection on another switch position that will give me neck and middle in series (humbucker), then paralleled with the bridge. This would basically give you that humbucker/bridge sound that K Richards used for years ... I think S Copeland/Police used it as well.

My guitar has an S-1 Volume pot, a 5 way switch (NOT a Super switch) a standard tone pot, a 3 position toggle switch and the 3 single coils.

There has to be a way and I'm sure it would include a number of other series combinations. I guess I'm hoping that someone has already done this and I can stumble onto their schematic somewhere ... ya, I'm that lazy... Someone told me that there is a Fender American Deluxe schematic from the early years of the "S-1" switch that does this but I looked through Fender's published schematics and didn't see it.

Anyway, thought I'd get a shout out there, just in case.

Thanks for any help ... I hate the thought of tearing my Tele down and stabbing at it with the meter probes for hours....

Re: Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

I know my 1982 'The Strat' has similar stock wiring to this, but it uses a strange proprietary 2 position switch instead of a tone knob. I don't know if this is possible with an S1. You get the standard switching, + this:

neck and middle pickups in series
middle and bridge pickups in series
neck and bridge pickups in parallel
neck and bridge pickups in parellel, with the middle pickup in series

Re: Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

That’s almost what I have currently. It’s when you add that bridge pickup to the other two
in series that seems to screw things up ...

Re: Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

After about 30 hours of digging around the net I have finally figured out that the wiring schematic I'm looking for would be for a 2013 American Deluxe Stratocaster. American Deluxe Strat wiring prior to 2013 is different.

So now I'm wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts (on line) of a 2013 (or newer) Fender American Deluxe Strat schematic.

Failing that, could someone who owns a 2013 Fender American Deluxe Strat shoot some detailed pictures of the backside of your pickguard the next time you have the strings off?

FYI - I found a diagram of the switch positions in relationship to the active pickups while researching the "S1" switch. Unfortunately the page didn't include any links as to how the thing is wired.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

... why won't this let me upload a pic? The options are there and I've tried many times (it worked once) but the ability lacks and there's no explanation as to why...

Its the third button from the right on the quick reply box at the bottom of the page

Inexplicably malfunctions on certain browsers running on certain mobile devices though

I can upload pics but I can't post 3rd party hosted ones.

Re: Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

Firefox on my home PC running Win7... Out of a dozen pics only one made it. The rest had to be linked from Photobucket.
I have a pic but didn't want to clutter up my PB folder... I'll upload it and post in a little while.

I added in an on off switch to 'Vinnies' brainwork. I think you could also use the S-1 switch instead of the toggle. Added to the bridge pickup. It bypasses the tone controls and goes straight to the vol pot. It looks like it would give you what you want in position 4 and other options as well. I don't entirely know what I'm doing and someone else may have a better solution.
I can also post a scheme using Alpha push/pull pots instead of CTS if it's too confusing. You can switch pot and cap values to your liking.

Hey Herby - Thanks for this... but here's what's missing: I'm trying to get the neck and middle in series (as in the "DOWN/LOW CUT" position 2) and then the bridge in parallel with those two or as I've seen in written in shorthand.... N*M+B. (In affect, all 3 Pups generating sound with the neck and middle appearing as 1 pup and then the bridge paralleled in.) You'd be making a humbucker out of the neck and middle and then paralleling that humbucker with the bridge.

I got an email from someone yesterday saying he's seen the schematic online with a blender pot (instead of a 2nd tone pot) between the bridge and the other Pups.... I never have, but as mentioned in earlier replies on this post, minus the blender pot, it's supposed to be the 2013 American Deluxe Strat schematic.

Thanks again,

kp

Re: Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

The plan above allows you to turn on the bridge pickup with any other combination. This would get you what you want and a lot more. 'Low cut' pulled up and 'super switch' set to position 4 gives you neck and middle in series. Turn on the bridge pickup with the toggle (or S1 switch) gives you that pickup added in parallel.

Herby - thanks again! I just got back to a PC after most of a week of running around "off the grid". I had just looked through your switch positions labels, not realizing you had used push/pulls for the tone pots. I'm going to have to see if I can translate your schematic to the S-1 pots (I already have) and see if I can make this work.

This should make for an interesting hard tail Strat build...Again, Thanks...

Re: Wiring Advice .... Chapter 2

Hope it works for you. If you get lost with the CTS push pull pot wiring I'll translate it to Alpha pots for you. I'm unfamiliar with S-1 pots...
