Wiring gurus, any way to get a "bridge + middle" & "bridge + neck" for a SG Custom?

Wiring gurus, any way to get a "bridge + middle" & "bridge + neck" for a SG Custom?

I have (what I'm guessing) is a very difficult question for the SD wiring gurus.

The way an SG Custom usually works is that in the "up" position, it gets just the neck, in the "down" position, it gets just the bridge and in the "middle" position it gets a cool, almost quack like sound (it's the bridge and middle humbucker).

I dig the unique sound in the middle position, but I was wondering if there is some way I could add another switch so that I could pick between the bridge + middle quack and standard humbucker bridge + neck position (in the past I've always used that for clean single note lines, so it would be extremely helpful to have that option).

I'd be willing to take out a volume or tone pot to make room for the mini switch, does anybody have any advice how I could do this (schematics would be uber helpful)? Thanks to anyone who can help me out :)

I've always wondered this also. My thoughts on it were to wire the bridge and neck up normaly with the 3way but only using 1vol and 1 tone, then wire the middle pup up to a volume and a kill switch so you can turn it on/off but still control the volume. That way you can have any combination you want

??? Just wire the middle to a volume (switch out a tone) and then go master tone. Vol 0 = off. FAde it in at will with neck, bridge, or both.

Cool idea Aceman and Ez74! I'll see if there's a way I can rewire this thing to act like a standard two humbucker guitar and go from there.

On page 256 of Dan Erlewine's book "Guitar Player Repair Guide" there are schematics showing how to rewire your SG/LP using the stock parts to do what you guys want to do

You end up with neck volume, bridge volume, mid volume, and master tone. You blend in the mid pickup to any other pickup, or when neck and bridge are turned down, use the mid on its own.

Very cool... looks like I'll have to pick up that book... it's about time I learned how to intonate guitars properly :fing2:

Every guitar player should have a copy. It pretty much outlines how EVERYTHING works and how to do it.

How bout doing a push/pull kinda thing!? Where you pull the volume/tone knob for on/push for off? do it for all 3?

Cool idea viewaskew2k5. I never really dug the push/pull thing, but I'm sure it works.

Right after I figured out a schematic myself to do this properly, I came across this schematic online... anybody else who's looking at doing this would probably appreciate it (this one's courtesy of Guitar Electronics):

Push/pulls are cool, but you might run into problems fitting one inside an SG.

Thanks for the info guys, I got my StewMac parts in today and I wired it up with all new parts and got it working perfectly the first time with absolutely no grounding issues.

I strongly recommend this mod for anyone with a 3 pup guitar, but wants the tradition 2 pup type tones. I keep my middle volume rolled all the way back usually and when I want some strat like tones, I put it in the middle position and completely roll in the middle and somehow 3 humbuckers together works great!
