Wiring Gurus, Help!

Can anyone help me figure out how to wire a guitar with the signal going through the Tone pot and then the Vol?

Usually the signal goes through the Tone pot, through a cap and then to ground. The (+) wire bypasses the Tone curcuit all together.

So how do I do this? Diagrams would be appreciated.

i am gonna give you my first impression and artietoo or kent or robert_s or others will correct me where i am wrong ...

i think it doesnt matter because a guitar circuit is actually an AC circuit ... which means that even if you have a 'start' position that you 'trace' through the schematic until you get to the 'end position' (e.g. ground), that is only representative of half of an AC cycle ... for the other half of a cycle, you trace backwards through the schematic ...

i suppose i'lll have to send my E.E. degree back to university if this is wrong ...

and you mightve just not been precise enough in your question (which is ok 'cus i think i understood what you are getting at), but the signal doesnt go to ground, per se, after the cap ... the RC circuit just shunts the highs to ground as you turn the R pot down

heh, and yours is newer ... at least i got 18 good years outta mine before it went to hell ... maybe yours is still under warranty

ps - skh, is there some particular reason you want to change the circuit that we can help you with? ... maybe we can get you to where you are aiming for with a different circuit mod ... let us know ...

Well, I am using mine, but only as a technicality. I really didn't need it to perform the work, I just need it to make it official.

You're right asking for specifics. Change for the sake of change is bad, but change for the sake of tone is necessary and good.

I think I understand what you're saying Tone. I've just been looking at wiring the whole curcuit backwards and my guess is it won't make any difference. Hell, I have a Negative Ground car and it's not like it runs backwards or anything. The right turn signal doesn't come on instead the left. Actually I had a car like that once. And I'm the one who screwed up the wiring, which doesn't bode well for this project.

So hang on to that sheep skin. It's all Lew's fault anyway. He's the one who introduced me to the idea of the '50s mod in the first place. :biglaugh:

O.K., I'm working on a Tele. A '50s RI neck on a standard Tele body with a '72 Custom pg. Should be interesting, huh?
The plan is to use a PG in the neck and a JD in the bridge.
I've been considering using a master Vol and a blend (as opposed to the standard dual Vol.) So, I believe I'll need to run the signals through their respective tone pots before blending the signals. Any thoughts?

I have a Negative Ground car and it's not like it runs backwards or anything.

Make that a positive ground car.

I can't keep the (+)s and (-)s straight, no wonder I'm confused.

The signal doesn't actually "go through" the tone pot at any point. It's more accurate to think of the signal as a river and the tone pot as a pump set up on the river bank that siphons off some of the water (treble).

You could wire this up with a master tone control if you wanted to; having a blend pot doesn't mean that you need individual tone controls.

You were going to skip the 3 way switch- right?
