Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

Hi!
I want to use two toggle switches in my guitar (On/On 6 pin) in this way:

- First Toggle split both humbuckers neck and bridge pickup
- Second Toggle change from Series to Parallel

I see in the SD wiring diagrams how to split or do series/parallel but I cannot find a wiring diagram with both split and series/parallel in two different toggle switches.. can You help me?

My pickups
Neck SD JB Jr
Middle Fender
Bridge SD Custom SH-5

Thanks a lot :)

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

You can just combine the two diagrams to get what you want. However, you will need 3 switches...one can be used to split both pups, but you will need two more to do the series/parallel, one switch for each pup.

You can get away with using only two switches if both are DPDT, on/on/on switches wired as follows...

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2h_2v_3w_ssp

Up is series, middle is split, down is parallel.

(ignore that the diagram shows them as push/pull switches, but wire the two toggles, on/on/on, exactly the same as in the diagram).

And what about this? It was the wiring of P-Rails...

OK, that diagram will work. But the explanation at the bottom of the diagram is incorrect.

up/up = split to slug coil
up/dn = series
dn/up = parallel
dn/dn = split to screw coil

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

That should work to make them both go the same way for series/parallel, I think towards the bridge will be parallel and towards the neck will be series if I'm reading it right. Obviously, how you orientate the switches will be the deciding factor on how they function though. The reason it was backwards before was because the diagram you used was for push pulls and the pots were opposite each other and you switches will not face opposite directions.

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

So if I put both toggle "off" I will have bridge series and neck parallel?
Thanks for the help, I saw that the diagram were with pots opposite each other :p

No, sorry if my wording was confusing. Both humbuckers will be in series or parallel at the same time, I meant the direction of the switch will face the neck or bridge side of the guitar.

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

If you don't like the operation of the switch direction, just rotate it 180 deg in the guitar.

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

Ok :) thanks you all.. I will let you know when I'll do the wiring (I'm waiting for the neck pickup..) thanks :D

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

The confusing thing in your diagram is that you have the switches labeled "on" and "off". They are NOT on/off switches...they are on/on. You need to understand how switches work to be able to understand what they do in a diagram

In your last diagram, when a switch is in the "up" position, the bottom two lugs on each side are connected. And when a switch is down, the top two lugs on each side are connected.

So, in your last diagram, if you have both switches "up" (bottom two sets of lugs connected), you will be connecting red and black going to the 5-way switch and green and white going to ground. This will give you both coils in parallel.

And with both switches "down" (top two sets of lugs connected), you will be connecting red and white (isolated) and black only going to the 5-way switch. This gives you both coils in series.

When the top switch is "up" (bottom two pair of lugs connected) and the bottom switch "down" (top two pair of lugs connected), you will be connecting red and black going to the 5-way switch, but the white will be isolated and only green going to ground, therefore only the screw coil (red/green) is active.

And finally, with the top switch "down" and the bottom switch "up", the red wire is isolated so only the slug coil (black/white) is active.

But remember what Swyse said, if you rotate either or both of the switches when you mount them in your guitar, you will get completely different results.

Re: Wiring help (Toggle Split and Toggle Series/Parallel)

Yeah it was a mistake call it "off" :p
I've done the wiring: it works perfectly.. but I have a "problem", when the first toggle is up and the second is down I have the south coil split of both humbuckers. If I want te south coil of the bridge hb and the north coil of neck hb should I switch red with white from neck pickup?
