Hi,

New to this forum and wiring. I have tele style guitar I have installed a 5 way strat switch in. I would like to wire it using this diagram, but rather than splitting the bridge humbuckers use that position to put the neck and bridge out of phase. If that is do-able can someone point me in the right direction with the wiring? I prefer not to ad a push pull switch. thanks

Re: Wiring help with 2 humbuckers 5 way switch

Idk if you realize this but the positions for that switch are:
1:bridge hb
2:bridge + neck hb in parallel
3: neck hb
4:Bridge hb split
5:Neck hb split
I have used this diagram before, and didn't realize what the positions were till I was done wiring lol
I don't believe what you want is possible with a stock style 5 way switch..(you will likely need a super switch..

Thanks for the response Mark. I was hoping there would be a way of using position 4 to do the oop but I guess I'll have to run one HB through a push pull pot. I can't seem to find any diagrams that show any oop besides using a cap for partial oop with a lever switch.

I think your push pull idea (or a mini switch) for phase reversal may be the easiest..

Re: Wiring help with 2 humbuckers 5 way switch

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like position 4 is neck split to slug coil plus bridge split to screw coil. Position 5 looks like bridge split to screw coil.

Getting phase reversal will require either a super switch or a DPDT mini switch (or push/pull switch).

Thanks for the responses and advice. I ended up adding a push pull and when I finished found I wasn't really fond of most of the sounds. I'm now pulling the pickups out and trying a couple others I have laying around. This wiring/tone stuff is addictive! :) Yes I did try the bill Lawrence mod but it was a very subtle oop. I never thought of pulling the cap out. Maybe next time. :)

I had tried lots of different diagrams with my asat blues boy (first with a dimarzio chopper t/ gfs retrotron, and then with a lil59/59n and a 5 way) What I settled on was a 3 way switch lil 59/seth lover n, and haven't looked back. Simplicity with 3 great tones is nice!

One of my favorite ideas is a 2 HB guitar with a 5 way Super Switch, which keeps the signal hum-cancelling in all positions. It does require a magnet flip, though. I wrote a blog about it.

Re: Wiring help with 2 humbuckers 5 way switch

Wiring mods can definitely be addictive. My 2 HB Tele has probably one of the most complex wirings a Tele can have. 2 push pulls giving Artie's coil swap and OOP , a mini on-on-on between the pots giving cut/series/parallel for the neck pup (this works well with the coil swap mod) and a stock 5 way selectorgiving series and cap in circuit . Its great fun to play around with with but best to only use the 5 way in a gig situation. The bottom line to tone/sound is always of course practice practice and a good amp which suits your guitar and pups and ears.
