**Wiring Mod**

Hi there,

I was just wondering what everyone would think of the following wiring mod?

I have a strat with a JB4 in the bridge and a Sh-1 59 in the bridge.

I have a 5-way selector:

Position 1 - Bridge (Series)
Position 2 - Bridge & the coil of the neck pickup closest to the bridge pickup (Series)
Position 3 - Bridge & the coil of the neck pickup closest to the neck (Series)
Position 4 - The coil of the bridge pickup closest to the bridge & neck pickup (Series)
Position 5 - Neck Pickup (Series)

I don't know if that mays sense or would it work at all?

Just my $0.02 worth: but you might not hear much difference between positions 2 and 3, as in my experience there is not that much difference between the 2 coils of the neck pickup. (This is in contrast to the bridge pickup, where splitting to the coil nearest the bridge gives a much brighter sound than splitting to the other coil.

Also, AFAIK, any combination that uses 3 coils will not be hum-cancelling. However, in series the level of hum should be less (compared to the level of output) than in a single coil, as you have 3 coils' worth of signal but only 1 coil's worth of hum (the other two should cancel out.)

The only time that I have experienced a worthwhile difference between the two coils of a neck position HB was when using a DiMarzio Bluesbucker. (I shall not bore you with a full explanation here.)

In any event, one coil near the neck is always likely to be overpowered by two, wired in series, in the bridge position.

easier and with a standard switch
would be

bridge
bridge and single coil neck
both
neck and single bridge
neck

can only find a diagram with this with a superswitch

Yes - I should have added 'unless it's a P-rails' or other pickup with different windings between the coils. I've read about the Bluesbucker, but I'm not sure how it works - one coil seems to be a dummy coil or something similar?
