It's reduction of one of the coils of a humbucker using a tone or vol control- Incredibly easy to wire if you look at the diagraom-
I have it on my coolrail as on practically every humbucker I own-
Full clockwise gives me both rails on completly just like the pup sounds out of the box-
As you turn the pot down you get less and less of the 2nd rail and it becomes much more like a single coil with some added bass- Of course at some point you loose hum rejection, but my favorite sound on my cool rails is about 85% rolled off and I still get great hum rejection-
Some people 'split' pups which takes the entire 2nd rail out of the loop- No hum cancelation at all, plus you miss all of those shades in between-
My Joe Barden pups are nearly mini-humbuckers when both on full rail (really too thick for me)- But as you roll it off you get every sound in between and I ditched my tone control in favor of spin a split on my zionstrat-
