Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Hi, looking at the only diagram Duncan has for 2 HB with superswitch...it shows middle position 3 with both HB in full mode. Is it possible to have bridge, inner bridge, both inner HB coils, inner neck, neck? I would need to see how the pickup leads connect to the switch. Thanks.

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Yes and it is fairly easily done. What are the pickups, since color coding will vary?

If you're combining slug coils in position 3, I recommend flipping the magnet and reversing the wiring in one of the pickups. I also suggest you try splitting to the outer neck coil in position 4.

Jb in bridge ..Screamin demon in neck. I dont want to open up a pickup. Just want position 3 to be a blend of the hbs (single coils) with whichever coils possible without flipping mags. Ok on position 4 with using outer coil.

A magnet flip + wire reversal will cancel hum when combining inner coils. It is extremely easy, but not necessary.

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Thanks again for your help Greg. Im going through my guitars and trying to make some of them more versatile.

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

No worries. I didn't consider whether you were using the slotted fillister screw coil of the Demon as the inner or the outer coil. It is South, while the slug coil of the JB will be North. Combining those two will be hum cancelling unless either of the pickups have been modified or incorrectly assembled at the factory.

Do you have a link to a diagram or pinout of the switch so I can mark it up for you? Otherwise, I could use what I did in this discussion (link) as a boiler plate if you like.

Using slotted screws as outer. Hex on inner. The linked diagram works for me. Its basically the same as mine.1507851682711751734480.jpg

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

It's a little unorthodox, but it saves you a pole, which I would consider using to darken position 3 by shunting the volume with a 510k resistor.

For the JB: red is hot, black and green are connected together; white and bare are hard-wired to ground.

For the Screamin' Demon: black is hot, red and white are connected together; green and bare are hard-wired to ground (standard SD wiring).

The wiring assumes the slotted fillister screw coils of each pickup are South (stock SD configuration).

Positions: Bridge Series, Bridge Slug, Bridge Slug/Neck Hex, Neck Screw, Neck Series. 2, 3 and 4 are not hum-cancelling.

That is actually a very cool wiring scheme...I use 2 HBs and inner and outer coils- with a magnet flip, everything is hum cancelling.

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

I'll be happy to change the drawing if he wants to flip the magnet (or rotate the Screamin' Demon in the neck spot).

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Ill rotate the screamin demon if that is an option to avoid hum. Im sorry Greg. I should have stated I would do that. I may sell the demon at some point so i dont want to open it up. Could you please provide the wiring with the hex side closer to neck or north? And the slotted screws closer to bridge? Thanks for all your help. I feel I owe you a beer or 3.

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Sure, I can do that. In addition to the rotation I'd consider swapping the short hex screws with standard long slotted fillisters. This should improve both positions 3 and 4. I haven't done it myself, but I think I'd like it better for position 5 as well. I know people rave about the Screamin' Demon in the neck, but from all the clips I've heard it isn't my cup of tea. I love it in the bridge spot, though, especially when paired with an SH-10N.

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Actually, I did order and install the longer slotted screws and swap almost all of them out except for the low E and A strings. I like the pickup in the neck position in that guitar....im still experimenting with that pickup. I love the pearly gates neck the most I think as far as neck pickups.. But I have this habit of wanting to constantly tweak/experiment with things and tinker for a good while...and then get back to playing...and the cycle repeats eventually lol

Re: Wiring question...2 HB w Super5

Cool!

...so orient the Screamin' Demon so the Seymour Duncan coil is the inner coil and use this...

Have you considered cutting long fillisters under the A and E? I'd start by keeping 3/4 of the difference in length between the short hex and long screws under the A string and keeping 2/3 of the difference under the E string and continue cutting them shorter until you're satisfied.
