Wiring question

I have a HSH strat (little 59, ssl-1, little 59) and I was trying to wire it this way:
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHSH5L1102
However, positions 2 and 4 ended up not being humcanceling (phasing issue). The diagram then suggests to "move the coil tap output on the switch from ground to hot as shown" and I didn't quite understand it. Shouldn't I switch hot and ground wires? What happens when black, white and red are soldered to hot (as the diagram suggests)?

Thanks in advance!

The diagram as drawn splits the humbuckers to the stud coils. Their proposed fix if the notch positions are not humcancelling splits the humbuckers to the screw coils.

The black is the start to the stud coil and the white is the finish to the stud coil. The red is the finish to the screw coil, and the green is its start. By placing the black, white, and red all to output the signal passes through the screw coil, leaving the stud coil hanging on the hot side of the signal. For some people this is a noise antenna, however with proper internal shielding and solid grounds, I have not found this to be an issue.

Good luck!

Re: Wiring question

Thanks for your post MikeS.
I soldered black, white and red wires to output and now it's completely hum-canceling in notch positions (does it mean that my middle pickup is in fact RW/RP?).

Although the tone sounds just fine, it seems that both coils of the humbuckers are still on (I touched both coils with a screwdriver and they both do make a sound. Actually, the north coil of bridge pickup makes a "normal" sound when touched, and the north coil of neck pickup sounds "noisy/buzzy" when touched). Is it because I'm dealing with single-coil sized buckers?

After all, I was just looking for that classic vintage sound in notch positions (and some versatility...) If you had these three pickups in hand and a super 5 way switch, what would you consider doing?

Thanks again! :)

Re: Wiring question

When you say you wired them all to output I'm assuming they are all switched to output per the wiring diagram. The noise you get when touching the stud coil happens because the coil is hanging out on the hot side of the signal.

BTW I believe it means the middle pickup is not RW/RP. If it still has a label then it should state the model and whether it is RW/RP. I don't recall the polarity of the Duncan singles off the top of my head.

Re: Wiring question

Yes, they're all switched to output per the wiring diagram.
About that noise, why does it only happen with the neck pickup?

Thanks for the classes MikeS ;)
