Wiring question?

Hey guys,
New to this forum so if this is on the wrong board please feel free to correct me :)

But I was recently told by a tech when I was swapping my pickups out that the volume control should never be used as a push pull (or push push in my case) switch, which wasn't an issue because there was a tone knob so now that is the tone/push push pot. Is this true? It striked me as odd because I'm pretty sure Tremonti does it. The reason I'm asking this is that I'm about to swap pickups in a different guitar that only has two volumes, and I want a coil split for both pickups instead of just one like last time, and I want to do as little modding as possible.

Thanks,
Mitch.

Re: Wiring question?

I dont understand why he said so, he might have his own reasons, but honestly I never have heard of this. I think Lynch has a push pull pot as his Volume pot for to switch between pups on his guitars.

Edit: This should go to the pickup section. And yes Welcome.......:) warning this forum is addictive.

Re: Wiring question?

My own opinion agrees with the guy, just because I prefer any pull-up knob to be the tone. I like the volume to just be a simple CTS type pot.

But that's just preference. Gibson went the other way on newer models, assigning the volumes as pull-ups to split the coils.

Re: Wiring question?

Me also prefer to implement a pull/push in a tone pot, because when pulling it up, you can dramatically change the output loudness of your pickup, while a change in tone isn't so dramatic.

Re: Wiring question?

If it was a preference thing then whatever floats your boat. But this guy was saying it like it actually shouldn't be done. To be honest I think he was over my fussiness, I was asking a lot that day haha.

That is true, hermetica. I might have to consider that with my Tele as I do use the volume a lot on it more so than my other guitar.

Jocelyn, I had thought that a lot of people had done it before.

Re: Wiring question?

The potential change in volume when you pull or push would be the only consideration, in my point of view.

Re: Wiring question?

There is no rational reason to come to the conclusion your tech did.

The only time push pulls are bad, are if you simply don't like them.

I started with push pull pots, and I am very much so growing a distaste for them. The seem clumsy and will eventually fail (but that could just be me simply because I'm always changing the wiring, and repeated rewires add a lot of stress on the components). I much prefer mini switches because I like the layout much better (trying to solder the three potentiometer lugs already bolted in the cavity SUCKS), you can have more than just on/on, you can have more than just DPDT, they are more durable IME, easier to switch around IME, MUCH more available/cheaper, and I like the look of a bunch of switches. The only reason I would really use a push-pull is to have switching options without altering the appearance of the guitar which is sometimes desirable.
