Wiring trouble w/ Surfers

After getting my surfers installed, I noticed that positions 2 and 4 are noisy. I did purchase a RW/RP middle along with the surfer neck and Custom Bridge. I also followed the schematic that was provided with the p/ups, also listed here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/3s_1v_2t_5w.html

I'm now wondering if i need to reverse the wires from the RW/RP middle (black hot wire to switch, white wire to volume pot) to get hum cancellation. Is this the case? I'm also hoping that the tech I took it to did not mix up the neck and middle p/ups. Is there any way to check if this out? Cheers guys!

Re: Wiring trouble w/ Surfers

The black wire gets grounded and the white is hot, that goes to the switch.

2 & 4 should be almost dead quiet.

That double tone pot thing is the dumbest idea Leo ever had, it makes no sense.

I use a volume and one master tone both 250KA and a .047mfd cap.

I have been doing that since my first Strat, about 1974. I was all Gibson before that.

The easiest way to verify this on a Strat is to remove all the pickguard screws, then gently lift an edge of the guard and peer inside with an inspection mirror and a flashlight. That way, you don't have to undo the strings. There should be a sticker on the back that Identifies it as RW/RP.

Edit: It may just be an "R" on there somewhere. Not sure with Surfers.

To check the magnetic polarity, you could also take a small and not very powerful magnet and hold one end against the poles of the neck pickup and then the middle pickup. It should attract to one and repel from the other if one is RW/RP. Lew

Doh! Forgot about that. Good call Lew. :9:

Thank you for this information! I just tried the magnet test and both neck and middle pickups reacted the same, they attracted to the magnet. Looks like I may have gotten either two RW/RP p/ups or two basic neck p/ups...

I did check to see if this was any indication of RW/RP on the pickup, but there is only the serial number. The only pickup I am 100% sure about is the Custom Bridge as the serial # matches to the position.

Thanks! If you don't have humcancelling in the #2 and #4 position, you probably have two "neck" pickups. Actually, that's the way all Fenders were in the 60's...only three identical pickups. The neck, middle and bridge pickups were all wound the same. My '63 Strat doesn't have humcancelling either. Lew

Re: Wiring trouble w/ Surfers

I was lucky enough to find my compass lying around so I tested all 3 pickups. Looks like the the bridge is South Polarity while the neck and middle are North Polarity. Not 100% on this but in order to have hum cancelling in 2 and 4, would the Bridge and Neck have to be South Polarity and middle be North Polarity?

Again thank you everyone for your help! :)
