Wisdom Needed!

Hey guys,
Im a relatively novice guitar player and havent really started to **** around with my tone yet. Im playing a Jackson RR3 & would like to spend some moneys soon and invest in a decent amp and pups.

The sound Im looking for is almost strictly for metal with a little bit of clean playing. I really like the sounds that Scott Ian and Eric Peterson get and am after that thrashy Anthrax/Testament sound without sounding too old school or 'scooped out'. I also like a sound that is fairly rich in mids.

I was wondering if anyone out there could please share some of their sage like advice and suggest pickups that would go well with my guitar and amps that compliment them nicely to help me ball park the sound Im chasing.

At the moment I was thinking of chucking a JB in the bridge, 59 in neck and using a solid state Randall amp. Whatdya think?

Re: Wisdom Needed!

I think with the RR3, I'd put an Invader in the back, a Full Shred in the neck and that solid state amp. You'll get some nice cleans (even more so when you back the volume down on the pups) and the SS amp will give you plenty of crunch, which may not necessarily be Anthrax tone necessarily, but may imitate that Dime tone quite well.

Distortion/Distortion

Distortion/Full Shred

Distortion/59

Basiaclly the Distortion in the bridge of that guitar will handle most every type of metal rhythm you'll need, plus some pretty good leads, too. The Distortion in the neck will handle some great shred metal leads as well as some hard rock/bluesy slightly overdriven tones. The Full Shred in the neck remains incredibly articulate for leads and sparkles when clean. The 59 is a standard neck pickup match with the DD. To me it does a lot of things well, but doesn't really stand out in any one discipline. It's a great all around pickup.

Re: Wisdom Needed!

I would have recommended a Dimebucker for the bridge, but since you want a pup wich is fairly rich in mids:
JB/59
Distortion/Full Shred
Those seem like 2 combos that ll suit you to me.
