with all this wood talk, What kinda wood is this?

I've read it's some type of Ash, I've read Alder... I really don't know. It was made in approximately 1983 in Japan (Squier Bullet).

Anyone have a great guess as to what the wood is?

Bamboo

Probably poplar

Did Fender ever use Japanese Ash? Or was that pretty much exclusive to Ibanez?

If they didn't, I'd be inclined to say alder, and that it'd look great if you carefully stripped the rest of it, and clearcoated it.

Re: with all this wood talk, What kinda wood is this?

I have read at least one source that says it is Japanese ash...

Re: with all this wood talk, What kinda wood is this?

That looks highly likely, to me. Sand that puppy back and clear coat it.

The Japanese guitars used a lot of Poplar and your piece has some lighter grain in it in some photos which may be the lighting though. Here are some samples of wood grains to help:

My first thought based on the look of it was Alder, nice looking wood grain but I do know a lot of Japanese guitars used Basswood (this one does not look anything like Basswood) and Poplar.

Slowly but surely the finish will be removed

Re: with all this wood talk, What kinda wood is this?

I was going to say basswood just based on it being an earlier MIJ guitar... But that grain is making me think otherwise... Maybe a particularly stripy piece of basswood?

Looks like your dog is licking it. Ask it what it tastes like. LOL

She apparently thinks that it tastes great

I vote alder from the appearance. Looks very much like my alder guitar

Re: with all this wood talk, What kinda wood is this?

Alder. Poplar often has streaks of green and purple with a slightly wider grain.
But who can tell from a pic?

I can.

When I was younger, I worked as a contractor for many years. Nearly all of our custom cabinetry was made from alder. I know that wood well.

Re: with all this wood talk, What kinda wood is this?

I'm thinking alder as well. I also used to build cabinets, while we didn't use alder we built alot out of poplar and ash, and I did a refinish on an alder guitar about a year ago, and that looks alot more like my alder guitar than ash or poplar.

This is what my Alder Squire looks like, it does have a vintage natural finish on it.
