Wolfetone Pickups

I have had some great experiences with Wolftone Pickups. I had the Marshallheads in a couple of Les Pauls for awhile and thought they sounded great. They do the overwound PAF quite nicely and use an Alnico 5 magnet. Great tones.

I put a set of Dr Vintages in my Les Paul yesterday and WOW!!! Never had anything like these before. Great PAF stuff, and crank the gain and the harder rock tones sound incredible. Clean tones are scary! I can go from BB King to Allman Bros to Gary Moore to Van Halen to Whitesnake. All on one Les Paul. Th Dr Vs use an Alnico 2 magnet. They have a certain 'something' that many people try to describe with phrases like 'note bloom'. I don't know anything about crap like that -- I just know the Dr. Vs are it.

Mark, very cool...I was recently talking PAF clones with another guy and he swore to me that the Wolfetones were the only PAF clone that sounded better to him than his Antiquites... might just have to look into a set for my next 2 bucker guitar.

I ask everyone the same question!

These are unpotted - do they squeal under high gain?? I have been wanting to try Wolf's p'ups for years and have been reluctant to due to the fact that they are unpotted and even with nickel covers, they are not even "lightly" potted. I have had numerous unpotted p'ups over the years (Duncans, Tim Whites, Voodoos) and some even gave me problems at bedroom volumes.

My Brobucker squeals , but my Seth does not. I think if the cover is put on properly you should have no problems -- unless you're Pete Townsend or Uncle Teddy ;).

Nope - quiet as anything. I stand two feet in front of my Marshall - no feedback.

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

Hi Mark,

Gotta look into them DrV's!

I have had great experience (and still keep them) with brobuckers, ants (a5/a3 or a4/aged a2), rolphs (a2s), and timbuckers (a???). Marshallheads were cool but I think the brobuckers are simply better. The weak a5, I think, is the reason. Thicker, and more clear. It's weird I know, but that's why I think that the Brobucker is one of the best pickups ever. Even though I thought about trying a weak a5 in them Marshallheads, I never could (before selling them).

Anyways, we definitely need more high quality a2 PAF clones.

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

Wow. What's it like to actually *get* your pickups from Wolfe?

(He's a little behind on mine...)

Nice to see the good reviews keep flowing in, though...

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

I saw this thread and it reminded me that I put a Dr V in the bridge of my R7 and thought it sounded like poo. It was compressed and lifeless. I was very disappointed. After installing it I got busy with other projects and hadn't addressed it.

Long story short I cracked her open and realized the circuit in my R7 was crap (ceramic caps, treble bleed, etc.). I rewired it with ODs, CTS, Switchcraft and so on. I also noticed I had the p'up too close to the strings (duh...my bad.)

Anyway, this really is a great pickup. Very open and hi-fi sounding.

As far as Wolfe's turnaround time...I know he is looking at hiring some help because he is so backed up. I know many pickup makers are having a hard time obtaining supplies right now. Suppliers aren't keeping things in stock like they should and manufacturers won't sell direct. But rest assured he is trying to address the issues at hand.

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

Have any of you guys experienced any of the higher output wolfetones? Such as the Fenris or Timbre Wolf?

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

I had the Timbre Wolf for a while. It was very clear with great note separation - great rhythm tones, but found it a bit scooped.

I had the Marshallhead and the Caretaker but they sounded too weak for my tastes and not fat enough so I put the stock Burstbuckers back in the guitars. I prefer Rio Grande or WCR.

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

Im really liking my Genesis sounds pickups. Joey makes great sounding pups! Very musical. I am now using nearly all of his buckers. Vintage, Blues, Hot and Mr Browney..

Nah.. I have a couple of BBQs and I love them in the guits they are in, (Custom made legless one in my Michael Kelly and one in my new Dean ML) I dont think Im a "RIO guy". BBQs are awesome and I highly recommend, but thats the only one Ive used.. I have 6 Genesis Sounds pups, a couple Dimarzios and probably 25+ Duncans.. :headbang:

Never heardof Genesis Sounds. I checked their site....how did you get tipped off on them? I was also looking at some Suhr, Anderson, Motor City pickups and maybe even WCR.

Re: Wolfetone Pickups

Someone mentioned Genesis to me awhile back about the Mr Browney pup as I was looking for "that sound." I tried the pups and they are good. Joey (Palmiery, owner and winder) is very cool to deal with.
