wolfgang pickups?

Re: wolfgang pickups?

Then you need the Wolfgang Pickups. I don't think any in the SD line will be dead on. You'll only get in the ballpark.

If you're trying to nail his tone, good luck. It's been attempted and failed thousands of times because he has something nobody else has....his hands and technique. Get yourself a Custom Custom for the bridge and an Alnico II Pro for the neck. You'll be able to pull off any VH stuff with just a few tweaks on the amp here and there, depending on the era. Not exact, but in the ballpark.

Oh, and you need a Marshall tube amp or a 5150 to complete the mix.

Re: wolfgang pickups?

well i know there in no evh humbucker but anything that will get me close enough to his sound will be ok with me and i've thought of that exact pickup combo

Re: wolfgang pickups?

Well, there is the EVH model, or '78 Model, but it stands for Evenly Voiced Harmonics. All it is is an overwound PAF. Spending less on the CC is the better deal, and closer to the tone IMO. At least he actually used the CC. I don't know if he actually even used the '78 Model.

Re: wolfgang pickups?

Also, the Wolfgang pickups are hot so a JB is suitable. Russ Parrish, guitarist for the Roth-era tribute band The Atomic Punks has a JB in his Wayne 'Frankenstrat'.

Re: wolfgang pickups?

I've heard the closest pickups are an air norton in the neck and tone zone in the bridge. It's rumored the pickups were based on those with modifications.

I believe that will get you close to the Musicman Axis era. Wolfie pups have the mids pulled back more than the Air Norton/Tone Zone combo.

You need the Wolf pickups, then.

Seymour fixed, and then overwound one of the coils on Ed's "main" PAF. This was a roughly 9k Alnico 2 PAF. This makes the '78 legitimate in every way possible.

As far as I'm concerned, it's pure myth that Eddie ever used a Custom Custom.

But if the thread starter wants something closer to the Wolfgang, then yes, he'd be better off going with something using heavier gauge wire with a compressed sound. He should just buy the Wolf pickups, although those don't sound like Eddie at all. Neither do the Music Man DiMarzio pickups.

Yes, I know this. But for the price, I don't think it's worth it.

It's fact that he used it on Judgement Day.

Depends on what era you're talking about. Everyone is so stuck on the tone of the first 2, maybe 4 albums. God forbid if he decides to change what he uses. It still sounds like him no matter what, the tone is just different.

Re: wolfgang pickups?

if someone is looking for an overwound paf the Dimarzio Virtual hot paf is the one,it uses an alnico 5 magnet but it acts like a alnico 2 and it has a dc resistance of about 9 and it's $99-list and a better buy than the EVH or '78 model and a whole lot less expensive.I guess i'll just get a JB for the bridge and the Dimarzio Virtual Hot Paf for the neck since sammy hagar has a jb in his signature guitar and the paf for good ol brown sound

dimarzio NORTON in the bridge and a air norton in the neck
this combo is as close as you will ever get to the stock EVH wolf pups :)

Re: wolfgang pickups?

Are you looking for Edward's tone on a specific song or the tone of the Peavey Wolfgang?

Re: wolfgang pickups?

The only way you'll get EBH's dead on sound is by using his guitar through his gear. Oh, yeah, and only if he's playing it. If you want to get close, go for any overwound PAF and a hot rodded Marshall or 5150. With the right amp, I've heard people get really close with anything from the 59, JB, up through the 3 different varieties of Customs, as well as the Custom Shop EVH '78.
