Wolfgang vs. Ernie Ball EVH Musicman

Hey guys, can someone who has played both of these guitars help me out here? I'm looking at buying a '94 Hamer Studio from a private seller, but I won't be able to play it before I buy. I want to avoid anything with a thin neck, and the seller told me the neck thickness is very similar to the thickness of the neck on his Ernie Ball Musicman EVH. I've never played one of those, but I'd imagine they're similar to the Wolfgang necks, and I've been using a Wolfgang as my main guitar for the past three years. Can anyone tell me how the Wolfgang neck compares to the Musicman neck in terms of thickness? I find the Wolfgang neck to be the perfect thickness for me, so I'd like to get something in that range: not Ibanez shredder thin, but not quite baseball bat thick either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The wolfgang neck is pretty close to the ebMM EVH neck, with one difference: The EVH has a worn spot on the underside of the neck from the first to fifth frets. This is a replication of wear on ed's 5150 Kramer.

But in basic terms, they're pretty similar.

The wolfgangs necks have a flatter radius. 15" versus 12". Also the Wolf's neck is a bit chunkier then the EVH and gets wider towards the neck pocket.

To me it feels completely different. I prefer the Wolfgang neck...

I looked at a Peavey the other day. Pretty decent guitar but way overpriced to be used in a pawn shop. Wanted $1200 for it.

The above comments are correct: the Wolf neck is both slighter fatter, definitely flatter, and also has slightly higher frets (true Dunlop 6105s) than the Axis.

I own 2 Axis guitars. I had one re-radiused down to 12" (should've gone all the way to 15) and had Dunlop 6105s installed (NOT Warmoth's 6105s, which are NOT the same height!).

The depth of the Axis neck is still quite fat compared to a modern strat, let alone an Ibanez, etc.

I actually prefer the shape of the Wolfgang neck, except for the shape of the headstock. I prefer the finish on the Axis neck. That can easily be simulated on a Wolf neck. Just buy some Birchwood Casey Gunstock Oil, and also their beeswax.

I've played both. The EBMM, with the 10" radius, sorta a vintage feel, seems more comfortable, and has no problem with string bend dropoffs.

The Peavey, with the 15" radius, feels more like a shredder, like an Ibanez- and gives the neck a flatter, thinner feel.

I played both and bought the EBMM- it just felt and sounded better to me.

I own both models and there are things on each one I like Better. Lucid I dont understand how you can say it seemed over priced as when it comes to a Wolfgang throw the Peavey label out the window and just look at it as Eds guitar because it is a top shelf made guitar, and a clean Wolfgang Standard sells in the mid teens and sometimes higher on the used market.

Stevespeeder that was a great job on that video-top shelf! Also it was also a Peavey Special you used. Does the EB sound like it is 2K more of a guitar on the used market?

i have not tried a EB MM EVH in years, rare around these parts... The Axis i have played a lot and many say it's the exact same guitar as the signature model before it.... I own a Wolfgang parts mutt pieced together from various parts... the neck is off a top of the line Wolfgang archtop model... very nice!!!! one of my favourite necks ever... main difference i feel between the Axis and the Wolfgang is the larger frets in the Wolfgang are more my speed....

Currently own a Peavey Wolfgang Stoptail and a friend has the Musicman. Very similar necks, though IMO (and from reading what's above) the EVH Musicman's were smaller all round.

One thing to note though - though the profile of the Axis was basically kept the same, apparently they did widen the nut up to 1 5/8's - the EVH musicman was a tiny bit smaller. I found this out as I was contemplating getting the Axis becuase I have midget hands :)
