Basswood is great, but not as a stand-alone wood. Anderson and other boutique guitar companies use it for it's bass and lower end presence while using a top like maple to add brightness and top-end to the mix.

You're right, but I think in many cases the maple tops are an aesthetic thing rather than a tonal thing.

Anderson, Ernie Ball and Suhr all make solid basswood bodied guitars. the original Anderson model, the Pro Am, was all-basswood.

I voted Alder.

Ash is pretty, but is a little bright and twangy for me. I find with the Ash body guitars I had, it definitely needed some warming up (for my tastes) either in the pickups or with the amp.

I tried that new ash Fender Strat as well w/ the stock duncans and also found it be an "icepick". Neat sound for some things, but def not "warm".

Alder has a more balanced sound over the entire frequency range, comparitively.
