Back in my college dayz a friend of mine got to go to France to be a understudy with Hubert Laws. If you could go somewhere to study with your favorite guitarist then who would it be? What type of stuff do you think they would have you working on?

It's a toss-up for me between:

Tommy Victor

Ty Tabor

Scott Ian & Charlie Benante.

With Tommy, Ty, & Scott, I'd want to pick their brains on everything guitar, from how to play to how to get the Godlike sound. I'd want to focus on metal rhythym with Tommy & Scott, & with Ty I'd want to focus on everything I cannot do, which is basically everything except metal rhythym. With Charlie, it'd be about writing; pretty much every badass Anthrax riff was written by him.

I'd study under Ty Tabor myself. He has it all. Great chops, good songwriting ability and he has fun. Can't ask for more than that.

Good choice! But he looked up to Phil Keaggy. And I think that it would be cool to study with 'ol nine finger Phil.

Clapton in the Cream era. It's that amazing playing from songs like Crossroads and White Room that made me want to play guitar in the first place, so I couldn't think of a better choice.

That's an interesting one! I remember him in a Christian rock-ish band when I was a kid (late 70's-early 80's) & as the producer on a couple of Megadeth albums (Cryptic Writings, Risk?).

Petrucci. The guy has it all, the songs and the skills. I also like the fact that he doesnt let rockstar status take a hold of him.

Mikael Akerfeldt. He aint the most proficent guy in the world, but he writes VERY captivating solos (not to mention songs). I'd do a lot of work on phrasing.
