Worn frets ?

Guitar is Gibson Explorer , I bought it in 2012 and since then I used this guitar very often.
Lately , I played a lot riffs instead of pure shredding and while I hit chords on wound E and A strings(mostly) and let them ring , the notes die quick and they sound like out of tune a bit.
I checked the intonation with tuner and everything was in pitch.
Strings are new , Elixir 10-52 in D standard.

Can this be signs of fret wear ? I don't noticed any fret buzz. Maybe the crowns of frets are flatter than they should be ? Cause you know , I bend a lot.

On my other guitar (it came straight from luthier with polished and crowned frets) , sustain is 1000000% better than my Gibson.

Re: Worn frets ?

Yes I can take it to the same luthier :) I just want to know if this is the fault of frets.

1. I can see dents. I Would say that there is some flat area(probably due to bending m wibrato etc) , not to big but I can see it under good light.
2. Nut is low. When I fret string on the 3rd fret , I can see very tiny space between 1 fret and the string. I mean VERY tiny , like thickness of paper. On plain strings the gap is smaller than wound strings.

Re: Worn frets ?

That isn't a symptom of worn frets. Its a symptom of having your pickups adjusted too close to the strings. Back your pickups off in increments slowly while testing by playing chords and you should hear the sustain return at some point in adjustment.

If there is no buzzing, your frets are OK.

Re: Worn frets ?

Pickups are EMG 81 and 85 so it's not the problem. They are not passive pickups :)
I set them pretty close to strings (as EMG reccomend) , lowering this pickups only makes them sounding worse(IMO).

Re: Worn frets ?

Two more ideas: Is your battery new, and are you using the 25K pots that came with the pickups?

Re: Worn frets ?

Of course I use 25k pots. This is the quick-connect installation so it will be a problem to use any other pots. Pickup selector is stock Gibson. All other parts are from EMG package.
My Battery is ... oh jeeez , about 2-3 years old ? I guess it's worth a try to change a bettery , I'm gonna tell you if this solution worked. Thanks :)
