on Sundays i sometimes jam with a few friends... saddly the guy that plays guitar along with me has not bought a new amp yet... still uses an old SS Traynor from the early 80's. I heard these were awful amps a long time ago.... Traynor Tube amps are most times were much better, at least in the 70's...
Anyways i let him use my Fender Princton Chorus SS amp for a bit, which is an amp i do use at small low volume jams from time to time... i like that amp for it's fuzzy 80's metal like tone.... Used them for years as my main practice amp. Anyways i tried his Traynor/Boss DS1 rig out... It was odd!!! The more i turned up the gain on his amp with the DS1 on the cleaner the sound seemed to get.... The amp had a bright switch and with it off the DS1 made a real weak sound like the DS1 had a dying battery... Turn the Boost switch on and you got an extreme mid spike that was useless for anything.. With the DS1 off it had no real gain to the amp itself.... imagine a TS9 into a SS clean channel and that was about all i got..
What a bad setup, and there is nothing that could make it better... I tried every knob and still could not dial in a tone that was user friendly... He wants to buy a new amp so i hope i can find him one, almost anything is better then that thing.. I'm trying to talk him into a Vox Modeler like the ATV50.....
I use the stock DS1's thru some amps myself, like my C30 or C50 amps.. I like them.... but the DS1 and the SS Traynor was a BAD Trip!
