Worth it? - Putting new pickups in chinese copy guitar

Hey guys. I'm considering buying a Chinese copy guitar and dropping some expensive Duncan or dimarzio pickups in it. Think its a good project/investment? You can get the look of the guitar you want for cheap, but build quality and hardware will probably be lacking

For resale? No, you will be wasting money from an investment standpoint.

My Agile 2500 GT just needed better pickups and I would have gigged with it. If I had a band at the time.

It also needed a Floyd and 24 frets, but that's an entirely different discussion.

It depends on the guitar. If it sings upgrade it, otherwise return it.

Thanks! Also, would anyone be interested in a vantage neck through guitar with Floyd rose and coil tap? Everyone ive met who have actually played a vantage guitar never wanted to put it down. I mean damn is this thing comfortable to play

I'd say if you can play the guitar and you like it, it's worth it. But buying one sight unseen from China is a crapshoot. Might be good, might be okay, might be crummy, might be terrible.

Occasionally you find a cheap guitar that, for some reason, plays really well. It is worth it to upgrade those. But just buying an inexpensive guitar that you don't really have a connection to, and then upgrading the pickups doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'd rather save for a better guitar that you try out, love, and then upgrade the pickups :).

When you say "vantage", are you talking about one of these?

And when you say, "would anyone be interested", do you mean you have one for sale?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

Nice axe. But totally different than what I was asking about. ;)

Re: Worth it? - Putting new pickups in chinese copy guitar

If you like playing it unplugged, it can be worth upgrading. If anything is off, but you know you can fix it by making some adjustments, it is worth upgrading pickups & other parts.

Two basic rules for upgrading PU's:

- save the old ones, and put them back in if you sell the guitar

- buy used PU's (Duncans, DiMarzios, etc) and you can often get them for about half price

Well I mean all you said was vantage haha. which it is. Mine is from the early 90's. Idk if yours is a newer model but either way it plays great.
