Would Duncan Custom Shop Make An Underwound Antiquity Surfer Set (like 5.8K)?

Re: Would Duncan Custom Shop Make An Underwound Antiquity Surfer Set (like 5.8K)?

Honestly, I'd back away from all the technical details. Just tell them the sound you want, using the Surfers as a starting point. Telling them exactly what to do on a technical level is much less likely to produce satisfactory results. If you really knew what to do to a pickup to make it sound a certain way, you wouldn't need the Custom Shop; you'd just build the pickups yourself.

Custom Shop pickups are ungodly expensive. The way I look at it, in order to make a C.S. purchase really have any value (bang for the buck), you have to go in with the mindset that you are paying S.D./M.J./D.D. to apply their loads of knowledge and experience in order to give you exactly the tone that you want, not the specs that you think you want. It's an awful expensive way to go if the only way you are using them is to have something made to a set of specs that you hand over. Anyone could make a pickup to match a spec sheet, so why pay boutique prices? That's completely mis-using the CS's skill set (and overpaying for something that a trained ape could do, basically).

Looking at the options from many boutique or other hand wound options, the pricing is fair.

What are the prices from the Custom shop?? I have got some great pickups from Chevalier which were $170 for an entire set delivered (and wound to your specs/wants), and D.Allen are about 180 + shipping.

A set of three Psychedelic Strat pickups cost $330.00, versus $200 for a set of three CS '69. Based on the product description of the Psychedelic Strat, scooped mids, lots of high, lots of lows, and nearly identical DC resistance, I wouldn't wager that the Psychedelic Strat pickups stand apart from the cheaper CS '69's enough to justify the custom shop prices and wait time.

Well if they are going to make him an under wound antiquity I would think that would also be custom shop. He clearly likes the Fender 69's so I thought he might check it out if he's paying those prices anyway. If you don't want to pay those prices to see if it's worth it that's your prerogative.

The Psychedlic Strat set from the Custom Shop is totally the way to go. Exactly what you're looking for.

I just checked the gauss of the Ant II's to see if they are full strength A5 or degaussed, and they barely read 40 where as a full strength A5 usually hits 50, so I think the degaussed A5 of the Ant II is definitely part of it's magic and it relatively delicate output. I'm guessing for the same custom shop price as Psychedlic Strat pickups you can request under wound Ant II's, so I wouldn't take any chances on other pickups, and instead just ask the custom shop specifically for what you want, an under wound Ant II.

You have a Gaussmeter? That's bad ass.

Yeah it's the same model shown in this pic

I got it for just this sort of thing, trying to figure out why two pickups that look identical on paper might sound different.

Long story short the quote for each pickup custom shop made is $130. Strongly considering it but gotta put some cash aside first. Might just buy one for the neck position first. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Nice, I hope you get the sound you are looking for. I played a friends CS Duncans before and they were awesome. He had some high gain ups put in his schecter and that whole guitar came alive after the pickup swap.

Wow, thats quite expensive for a singlecoil. I tend to by PAF clones from boutique winders for that price each.

Re: Would Duncan Custom Shop Make An Underwound Antiquity Surfer Set (like 5.8K)?

Because I liked the Antiquity Surfer set I previously owned and how they sounded, BUT I'd like them just that little bit less hot. Which would essentially give them less mids and make them slightly less dark right? Can they aim to get a set at a certain output like 5.8K or is it like not that exact. Would this also make them sound a little less FAT? That would also be a good thing just for me and my personal taste. Any other thoughts about this would be appreciated. Along with maybe what it may cost to custom order this.

Also, would they wind me two at 5.8K I could use for the neck and middle only in a Strat? I don't like RWRP middles.

It's why I went back to my Custom Shop 69 set. I just preferred them as they weren't wound as hot.

But I have this notion, that I would prefer an Antiquity Surfer to them if and ONLY if they were underwound to 5.8k.

So I've now done this, here's my review thread https://forum.seymourduncan.com/sho...r-Wound-Review&highlight=antiquity+underwound
