Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

Re: Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

Hey guys,

I am really GASing badly for this baby at the moment:

I just would like to change those white covers (yuk) with something like this;

that would definitively make it an even more badass guitar.

Is that doable? How do you install those covers?

Thanks and sorry if my question sounds a bit naive! :onder:

Will fit only on the neck. It has 49.2 mm screw spacing. The JB bridge seem to be a Trembucker and needs a Trembucker cover.

Great advice, thanks. How do you install them? Do you just push 'em above the old PUP? Or do you need to solder/mod something? I can't find instructions around.

Re: Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

You can solder, but its not a must. Double sided sticking tape or some dabs of silicone works too. Some of my pups are soldered, some are just pushed on, but i like the double sided sticking tape. Some will argue the the nonsoldering method will cause a less good electric connections for optimized shielding, but .. hey this is a humbucker.

You can get the same type of black cover in trembucker size for the bridge pickup.

I am reading that covering the PUPs could severely affect tone. Is that true?

They make the pickup a little darker, even more so if it's wax potted, however it varies whether you can hear the change or not. I prefer covered pickup because I think they sound a little warmer to my ears. Putting a cover on a pickup without potting it can make it microphonic when played at loud volumes/ high gain (make it feedback a lot easier).

Re: Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

Cheap covers are made of cheap metal and can degrade tone severely. Good quality covers like the Duncans have far less effect- a little warmer is a good description. As for microphonics (NOT the kind of feedback you want to encourage), many advise putting a strip of electrical tape under the cover to damp any vibrations. Some recommend using double stick tape for this.

Re: Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

The stock pickups do not have covers. You would be putting covers on uncovered pickups. You can do that. You just need to check the spacing of the pickups, as Duncan make two spacings. You probably need to get one standard spaced and one Trembucker spaced.

There are techniques you can use to make sure the covers are installed properly. Even better would be to send the stock pickups in to Duncan and have the factory install the covers and wax pot the pickups.

Duncan covers are of a composition and quality such that they should not significantly affect the tone.

Nice guitar! I like the white on there. The Duncan covers might affect the tone a little, but those are good pickups, and I doubt my ears could hear the difference.

Re: Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

Well, I never waxed a pickup to his cover.. And of course I 'd like SD do it for me but I expect it to be a mess to organize from overseas.. Maybe I have to accept it like that with white covers and just enjoy it for how I expect it to sound (great), since the combination of PUPs in it should match what I expect to have in a guitar most of the times..
I also would have liked it to have a third knob, which I would have changed to blender pot..

Re: Would it be possible to swap these PUPs covers?

Get the white one. With the white pickups it looks really clean.

As for a blending pot, when you have a toggle switch, a more useful third knob would be a second volume control for the other pickup.

Really? 2 vol 1 tone is what you find to work better?
I always thought that 1 vol 1 tone 1 blend would give me a very comfortable control set but of course I could be wrong.
I have such a config on a Strat and I love to play it.

With a pickup selector, I find that the blend control tends to be ignored in favor of just using the toggle. On something like a Jazz Bass without a pickup selector, I find the blend to have a lot more function.
