The C5 is the "hot '59 without as much of the high end" of which you speak!
The Custom is a great pup and my favourite of the two, but (even when you clean it up) there is a hardness in the mids that doesn't quite work for blues.
C5 will be better for blues.

yunno, when i think of the full range of sounds that are heard in the spectrum of 'blues' - from stingin' thin tele all the way to very warm, barely any treble 'lucille' - i start to think that just about any pup can be played in a way that would make convincing blues ...
that said, i was gonna say custom custom instead of either custom or custom 5
i have a C5 and it sounds great for blues

Thanks t4d, another great answer! I already have a great a2 pickup in my V. I really love the Seth for blues. But I also love the chimey sound of the '59. It tends to be a little too brittle for my tastes on the top end. If someone could give me a pickup with the output of the Seth and '59, the treble of the Seth, and the chimey nature of the '59 I'd have the perfect pickup. I not asking for too much I know! :smack:
I think I'm gonna have to try the C5 in my Paul eventually.

Have you changed the pots and caps in that LP? CTS 500K audio taper pots can make all the difference. The brittle top end of the '59b can be tamed nicely by rolling back the tone and/or volume knobs if you have good components in the guitar. Might be worth trying if you haven't already done it.

CC, C3, C4 and C5 should be fine for blues, especially if your guitar is a little thin sounding or you use really light strings or have a light touch.
