Would this be stupid? - speaker/cab question

Right now I have a 4x12 cab that has 2 governors and 2 dummy speakers. I'm probably going to replace the dummy speakers with some new eminence speakers (I sold my Marshall) and I'm thinking about a few options

I'm definately going to leave the governors like they are wired (8 ohms) And
I'm wonding what you guys opinion(s) are on a few ideas I have.

First Idea is to leave the 2 governors wired to one jack and wire the other two speakers into a seperate jack. In essence it will be a 4 x 12 cab that consists of 2 sets of 2 x 12. I'll wire both into separate 8 ohms loads and when using 1 set I'll use the 8ohm out and when using both I'll use the two 4 ohm outs at the same time. (This will work fine according to the diagrams in the recto manual).

Second Idea is like the first, except instead of installing a 2x12 set, I'd install two seperate 12" speakers wired to seperate jacks. So, it would be a 2x12, 1x12, and a different 1x12 in the same cab. The draw back is that I would only be able to run 3 speakers at most.

The purpose of this is to get some different sounds from different speakers. I use my rig to record mostly and it's only 50 watts (most eminence speakers are rated with more than enough wattage to accomodate). And if I need to play live, I'll still have a loud enough set up.

If I were you I'd get 2x12 cab. I just downsized from a 4x12 Mesa to a 2x12 Mesa and I love it. 4x12 cabinets have been nothing but an inconvenience in my experience. 4x12 cabs are just to heavy and hard to move unless you have 2 people carrying the thing. The 2x12 is more managable and I can carry it by myself since its not so bulky. Just my opinion though. :dance:

I think putting different speakers in there is a good idea, mixing speakers is all the rage these days. I would even go so far as to say wiring them so you could choose your 2 Governors, or your 2 <insert new speaker name here>, or all four is worth it.

I wouldn't go farther than that, though. I don't know how well running a single 12 in a 4-12 cabinet would work to start with, and you'd probably end with too many choices. You'll spend all your time swapping speaker cables and impedance switches. Just wire it as 2 pairs.

You could even make the next two speakers different, but wire them together. In the studio, you could select one or the other by miking. Live, you'd be stuck with both, but people tend to be less fiddly live than in the studio.

Yeah, that's the idea. I'll have 2 seperate 2x12's that I can run either by them selves (either set) or together. I'm thinking that since the Governors are the 'British' style speakers, I'll make the next set an 'American' style set.

And you're probably right about using one 12" in a 4 x 12 cab. I didn't think of that :cool3:
