Given the quality variations in Epi LP's, would you buy one from Musicians Friend or off Ebay?

Thanks for your opinions

musicians friend i guess, coz if it comes damaged, u can screw them and send it back for another. :D
however that's assuming that the price is the same.

I bought two off ebay and one from MF. One off of ebay was a dog. At the VERY least, it needed new tuners. The second was a bit better, but not much. The one from MF was the best Epi LP I had ever played or heard (after some pickup switches). However, I still hated the feel of the neck. Felt like unfinished wood or something. All three got sold. I do however have an Epi SG from the Chinese Epi factory and damn if that doesn't feel just like a real Gibson after a fret leveling and setup. Sounds like one too. FYI, this is one of the chinese Gibson knockoffs that says Gibson, but it's really an Epiphone. Illegal here, but not there.

Neither.

I don't trust cheap imports enough to go sight unseen. I'd have to play it first.

It may seem easier and more convient to buy online but when it comes to guitars and amps just go out and play them, odds are if you have a "super" store near your area, you can find just about any mass prod. guitar.

The only Epiphones i've ever really played and liked are the ones my friend got for free for doing a good job workin for Musician's Friend. I mean i guess any guitar can be a good guitar if you know how to set it up right but given Epiphone's reputation i would just dodge that bullet entirely and look for a used Tokai Love Rock, maybe a Burny Les Paul copy, or something from www.rondomusic.net...

Buy pedals online, buy picks online, buy straps online, buy amps online, but for something with as many variables as a guitar. . . PLAY IT FIRST. All guitars (especially cheaper guitars) have variations even among the same models. Wood thickness, neck thickness, fret dressing, setup/intonation, proper installation of parts, resonance . . . none of these will be consistent. Go out and try the model of guitar that you want . . . then try as many other guitars that are similar to it. It may even turn out that you prefer stuff that you wouldn't have thought of . . .

Buying something sight unseen simply means you either have the skills to be able to make something play like you know it should or can pay someone to do as such otherwise it's an issue of simply not paying so much for it that you're not able to unload it for a minimal loss.

I've bought guitars that were total dogs after a setup. It took me a week to realize it was just a bad guitar, or possibly just a bad guitar for me. It resulted in me selling it and making my money back.

Depends on how particular you are. There are a lot of Epi's that are "ok" if you aren't gonna be a tone snob. But there are some great ones. But you gotta play some. Total crap shoot on-line.
