Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

Mesa Rectoverb combo?

The bottom line is that (a) I don't need stack and (b) I want mordern distortion sound.

I almost made my mind to do so ... I just want to hear advice from tone bros ...

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

I'd try a rectoverb or similar in a real playing environment before commiting. Recto-style mesas are terribly prone to going awol in a live mix.

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

My Rectoverb has never had a problem cutting through in a band situation. The Rectoverbs are not voiced like the Dual and Triple Recs as far as I know.

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

You can trade the 2204 to me any day of the week! :D

.... just dont expect anything in return

That's 'cause Recto-syle Mesa players are terribly prone to scooping their mids.....

...and overdoing the gain. It's a two pronged approach to making sure you end up being background noise.

I've yet to hear a recto player that has stood out in a two guitar band, and that's from local acts through to The Darkness.

As for the rectoverb, a guy in a band we play with uses one. The clean is quite good, but the gain is schmuzzy. Sounds good for solos, though.

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

As cool as 2204's are, they're pretty much a one trick pony thats loud. If that doesn't fill any real world use you have, do the trade. You've got some cool amps, so you may as well make 100% of them useable anytime you want. 2204's don't sound good till they're on 6.

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

Ouch! thats a tough one. I'd personally keep the 2204, but if you don't use it then I guess you're better off trading it off for something that you will use. It'll also give the 2204 a good home. Have you thought of just modding the 2204 for modern sounds? The 2204 can achieve the Mesa-esque uber-fart crunch (heh sorry) by simply modding it.

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

I'd either Mod it to what you need or make the trade.

Swap some El34s for the 6L6's if ya want more "british" vibe out of the Rectoverb.

And as others stated, easy on the gain, and don't scoop those mids.

Click HERE to hear how good a recto can sound if you don't go overboard cranking this and scooping that. All the tracks except "freefall" are Rectos.

Were those clips done with a dual recto or a rectoverb or?? And what was used on freefall?

Freefall was a MKIV.

Thanks! I've wanted to pick up a Mesa for a while now and I'm always interested in hearing some clips. Man that MKIV sounds so warm and smooth! Those recto sounds good as well!

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

Sorry to hijack your thread Brisk....

IMO getting the Mesa will probably make you a lot happier. I have a JCM 800 combo, and like someone said in another post, they are one trick ponies...

Re: Would you call me crazy if I trade in 2204 for

brisk, if you want modern distortion, you can't really get much better than a Mesa. Mesas aren't always buzzy, a lot of it just has to do with how you set them. I'm surprised you aren't getting what you want out of the Soldano though.

Soldano is a different breed. Yes my Lucky 13 has a modern-voiced OD channel (with the best clean channel I've heard so far) but I wouldn't say it is voiced for modern metal. My impression so far is that Soldano is about super LEAD overdrive tone (so called SLO), not necessary the modern metal riff tone.

I just want to bring the best out of all my amps. I can't stand my 2204 slacking off and reading playboy at the corner while other amps are working hard. At least I would be able to get better tone at a lower volume from Rectoverb.

Cheers,
