Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I ended up gettin' a Zakk Wylde Bullseye, but I'm not a big fan of the EMG 81/85 set. I like an Alnico II full blown sweet PAF sound. Huge!!! The EMG's have always sounded sterile to me. I want to keep the look of the guitar stock, so should I try some other types of EMG's? I've not had any experience with anything but the 81/85's if that helps.

Thanks!

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

i switched out the HZ in my alexi V for a blackout neck model. im probably gonna switch the 81/81 in my KK downing V for 85/60.

so, in short...yes.

as for recommendations, i'd try a pair of 60's (or 60A, alnico vs. ceramic) or for more beef an 85 in the bridge. possibly the 58 as well, but i dont know much about it.

or get whatever pickup you want and a pair of black plastic covers

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Try to switch the emgs around so that you have the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck. The set typically sounds much better that way.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I think on that piece as long as you go with double blacks you can stick anything you want in there. If you tried some sort of black/white or black/cream on that scheme, it would probably stand out a bit much.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

At first thought No I would not, not in any Sig model..but lets say I find a Guitar that I realy like that, that feels good, plays good but just does not sound right "to me", or does not go down well for me Tonaly speaking no matter how I adjust my amp . I know I like this guitar and want to use it.. I would consider changing pups on this guitar.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Its not a rare or otherwise valuable piece that will lose value because of a pickup swap. Put what you want in it and put the EMG's back in it if you sell it.

Lucid, This a totally in fun comment (well, mostly)

What a puss question. Stop wining like some b!tch that can't decide if her shoes match her bag. If you wanted he sig, then leave it the eff alone, and acknowledge that you got a guitar that you just can't play up to its potential. Nothing sounds wrong with that combo when Zakk plays - you must just suck. Or, you'd like it to sound different - then change the effin pups and move on. Ask the right question: What would look best in here? Double black, etc...

geez - gotta deal with indecisive punks this early...

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Sig model or not you still have to enjoy playing it, change the pups but keep the original electronics in a safe place so y9ou can always put them back in the future.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

That depends I guess. I'd like to have a SRV strat but I don't have much use for a single coil in the bridge. I'm not sure if I could bring myself to modify one of those! Same for a Clapton strat, I wouldn't rip out the electronics for a JB or DD! But a Zakk Les Paul I could.

Change the pups if the EMG's don't do it for you. I always found them sterile too.......

Keep them in drawer so you can reinstall them someday.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Change the PU's, but keep the original ones so you can re-install them if you decide to sell the guitar. This is falling into the no-brainer category.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Swapping just the pups and you are concerned?

A local guy bought a ZW and had it refinished because he could not stand the bullseye graphic. I don't know the guy personally, but I saw the guitar when it was finished and waiting to be picked up.

I was told he loved the guitar, but just hated the look.

Make the guitar how you want it to play and love life.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

If it was me, and I felt like experimenting, I'd get a pair of EMG 60As. Or just do what you know. You probably knew this, but if you go with passives you'll have to replace the pots.

AHHHAhhHHahHahhAhHHahhHHahH!

Couldn't say "swap the mags" for those, could you!

Well it's like this Ace, I have always liked Zakk and LOVE his guitars. I really like his style of playing too, but I have never been a big fan of his tone, especially live. It's sterile and it sucks. I've always felt if he would change pickups too to something a little more organic sounding, he would sound much better. I'm thinking of putting the 85 in the bridge and trying a 60A in the neck. Haven't ever tried that, but so far those seem to be the most suggestions I'm getting. As far as not buying it if it wasn't what I wanted, hell bro, I don't have the cash to buy a ZW. My loaded aunt got it for me the other day cause I said I liked it. Don't get me wrong, I had always wanted one, but figured it was way out of my reach. I just want it to sound more along the lines of "my" style.

Please tell your aunt that I like the Ibanez Paul Gilbert model. Thanks. ;)

You bought the Gibson ZW sig? Lots of dough for that one man :D Anyways, before you go about changing pickups, run the EMG's in 18v. Its a simple mod and it really opens them up, they don't sound so compressed, have more headroom and improve the clean tone also. I have an EMG 81 in my Focus 1000 and its great running it with the 18v mod. I never liked the EMG tone but then I heard about the mod and checked out a bunch of video clips and was intrigued. So I bought the 81/85 set and gave it a shot and like it a lot. I wouldn't run active EMG's without it and they made a customer out of me because of it....and I used to HATE actives before. Here's a good link explaining it and how to do it. Its easy and easily reversed and cheap to do.
