Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

WOW!! congrats! great gift!

Yeah, do what you want with the pups. Keep the stock stuff so you can return it if you sell it. Its not like its a 59 and having non stock solder joints would knock $200grand off the value...

I dont see why someone would buy one to refinish tho.. Buy a custom for less..

let us know what you end up doing.. I too have a Les with a Zakk set that Im not thrilled with and am trying to decide what to do..
Im intrigued by the 18v mod. Also will try switching them..cheap fixes first..

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I know I'm new here guys but trust me, do the 18v mod before any pickup swaps with your EMG's and then decide. Also, I always recommend that people tape up their batteries with some sort of tape cause the outside of the batteries could touch 2 points and possibly short circuit something in there who knows. Better safe then sorry.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Dunno, i think spending lots of money on a guitar that you don't like the way it sounds is kinda silly, just like spending 1000s on a guitar and changing the pickups is kinda silly- but since we are on a pickup board, and i hate the way EMGs sound, yeah, go for it.

btw, the only signature models I'd consider are that set neck blackmore or the EBMM Morse Y2D. I'd keep em stock. But hey, I am all for forging your own path.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Would I change pu's in a sig model? There's no guitar I would refuse to change pu's or anything else in. If I thought it would make it sound better, I'd dunk a Burst in the toilet.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I don't have problem swapping pups. Now, if I had his rig to go with the guitar, then I might keep it stock.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Why'd you buy the guitar ? As a Zakk tribute or just because you thought it looked cool or because it played cool ?

If you simply wanted a nice instrument with a bulleyes graphic then put whatever you want in it.

Regardless Zakk isn't going to have his feelings hurt and its not going to affect the value of it or anything, heck, better pups might actually make it more desireable on the resale market

I usually view sig modesl as simply a guitar that maybe comes in a diffent finish options etc

I actually looked at the Mark Hoppus bass. Now I think Blink182 is one of the most annoying bands Ive ever heard and I dont think he's an impressive bass player either, but his bass had a jazz body and pbass neck with pbass SD bassline and came in some cool colors like surf green

So Id only of bought it for the color, design and pups and wouldnt care in the least whos name was on it. Heck Id probably buy a new neckplate just so it doesnt say Mark Hoppus!

After a year an a half, I finally have a sig!

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I ended up gettin' a Zakk Wylde Bullseye, but I'm not a big fan of the EMG 81/85 set. I like an Alnico II full blown sweet PAF sound. Huge!!! The EMG's have always sounded sterile to me. I want to keep the look of the guitar stock, so should I try some other types of EMG's? I've not had any experience with anything but the 81/85's if that helps.

Thanks!

:friday:

Yes sir . . . i would !

First of all, i do not like the sterile "it all sounds the same" active EMG's !!!

Secondly, i love the SD A2P's (see sig)

Thirdly, IF you feel the need to try actives, do try the BLACK OUT set !!!

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Just send me the dadgum guitar and I'll rock it stock!!;)

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Abso-fracken'-lutely!!! :D

Seriously man, there's no guitar I'd buy JUST because my guitar hero played one like it.
Just because it worked for him it doesn't mean it'd work for me nor does it mean I should work to make it so.

I need my guitars to become an extension of myself, not an additional hurdle I need to jump over.
If that means putting a 1000 worth of parts in a 300 guitar (and I have done exactly that) then so be it.
If again it means taking a screwdriver and/or solder gun and start screwing with a 3000 or so guitar same deal.

It's gotta work FOR ME and to hell with what other people think :D

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

i dont know about getting a guitar cause of my guitar hero.

But i sure did get the JB because i loved marty friedman´s tone.Never could cope it really, but tryng to do so sure did improve my playing(alot).

Id get an emg 85 with the steve lukather model. It plays wonderfull.
Try the emg as hard as you can,and remember,it is generic sounding, but that exact argument is what forces you to sound specific sounding, threw trial and error,to get to your own sound.
Im with Ace and Zappa on this one,"shut up ,and play your guitar".

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Why not change them? You might get on to something cool and fresh!

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Definitely. If I ever get drawn to a signature model it's usually because of neck/body shape or some other playability-centric feature, not the pickups. After all, you can put any pickup into just about any guitar for the most part. If they were special pickups designed for that guitar I'd at least keep them so I could revert the guitar back to stock form should I ever want to sell it. The bridge pickup in Andy Timmons' signature Ibanez or the middle single coil in Vai's JEMs are two examples of this.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

It's the perfect excuse to keep her stock, after all it's just another "Tool", and force
yourself to get another guitar to perform other functions. The end result is more "TOOLS"
That's how I convince myself to aquire more guitars, and as Aceman put it, if Zak can
get great sounds out of this recipe, then so can anyone. The dilemma here is that
you need to get another LP, what a bummer!
Will.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

Ever think of tryin out the livewire classic II's? Direct swap right there, keeps the original look.

Got one in the neck of my LP. Sweet pickups.

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I'd totally get a sig guitar - but then I wouldn't go changing it one bit. And if I did I wouldn't be a wuss about it!

Re: Would You Change The Pups In A Sig Model?

I would totaly replace the pickups in a signature model. I was going to replace the pickups in my Ibanez JS1000BP but then I just ended up selling it. If you want an active type character, try the DImarzio D-Activator in the bridge and neck perhaps? That's a hell of an aunt you got there.
