Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

Re: Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

i am currently doin this with most of my products. the even bigger bonus is shipping material comes with the ATA case, so you have a shipping carton built it.
make it standard equipment, or better just dont mention it, and when they get the amp, WHOA!!! free road case.

No road case for me, thanks. I'm a gig bag guy all around. I have 'em for my guitars, my pedalboards, and my heads. Speaker cabs are left nekkid but them's the breaks.

I would have almost no use for the case...nor the space.

If this is the stuff I think it is, it's sticky as F*CK.....ever ttry to get it off your hands??? It would suck to get it INSIDE the amp:rolleyes:

Then again, it might be the same stuff the others use, so..........what do I know:laugh2:

Scott,

That ATA case is too cheap and it does not look like the real article.

ATA cases are stury and can actual handle airline handling problems and generally cost around $280 for the small size case.

Re: Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

If the small can stuff is done correctly, it shouldn't make any difference how sticky it is. But, I can see it presenting problems of getting the box open for the first time. As long as you had the amp wrapped up good in plastic, it would probably work. I've used that stuff when I wanted to seal up the gaps in my music room construction project a few years ago. It is hard to gauge how much to use and it just keeps on expanding, no matter what until it's done!

I think I've got a decent plan in place now. The heads have to be shipped to me in some sort of normal shipping box. I'll continue to put the completed head back in that box, then put that box inside another one with foam peanuts. It won't protect from 6' fall shearing forces, but other than that, it ought to work.

Re: Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

Scott, what I've been doing when shipping amps...or anything for that matter...is like you said, double box it.

But at Home Depot in the insulation dept, they sell these sheets of styrofoam for like $5.00 for 6-7 sheets approx 4' x 2'. I line the bigger box with these sheets, place the smaller box inside & if needed, throw some peanuts or something in to make it nice & tight.

Haven't had a problem yet & I've shipped 4-5 heavy combos & a few heads this way.

I use the sealed air stuff, the 1" "bubble wrap" stuff is great,- tubes are removed & wrapped in that stuff & placed inside the amp like a turkey's gizzard... wrap the amp in 1 layer & box it (penetration protection). Another (thick) layer of bubble wrap. Add shipping box. Styro sheets would work OK too (better penetration resistance), but does not distribute weight on impact like air and takes up landfill whereas bubble wrap can be collapsed to nada (I employ my kids for that job).

Re: Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

There are a number of people advertising "ATA case"(s) on eBay but the products range from high quality to absolute junk. One NY seller that I looked into a few years ago had a reputation for building cases that would barely stay intact in normal use not to mention an accident. If I were selling amps I think that I would avoid selling cases as part of the deal unless you wanted to add an option for a recognized name brand case like Anvil. If you sent someone a great amp but a so-so case your reputation as an amp builder could be tarnished even though you didn't build the case.

Re: Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

Yep, I'm getting an earfull on the case thing. That is no longer going to be an option.

Re: Would you pay $100 more for an amp that came in an ATA case?

My Diezel came in a box that was over twice the size of the box my JCM2000 head shipped with.... It made it over from Germany, to Alabama, to Dallas OK.

I'd like to think this is just bad luck. I have bought and sold a lot of stuff via UPS/Fed-X with no issue before. Maybe I have just been lucky.
