Happened to walk into a guitar shop today that I normally stay far away from as I find the owners to be your typical "rude old people" that are angry with kids these days and their music (even though they're the ones keeping them in business), and also because they generally have nothing good there. Well, while on break from work today I stopped by with a co-worker of mine.... and the last statement I made about this particular store was proven way wrong.

Hung up and hidden in the corner they had an Ibanez Destroyer II. Flame maple top, MOP block inlays with the abalone centers, gold hardware, etc. Oh wait, did I forget to mention that it was N.O.S.?!?!? Yes, that's right. It has never been sold. This thing was *pristine*. I was amazed. It was so clean that I had to ask them if it was a reissue. I cannot beggin to explain how shocked I was about this guitar. So I think I may know what I'm saving my pennies for.

One quick question though: Anyone know if they did make a reissue of those guitars? I don't think they'd blatantly lie about it but you never know. I didn't get a chance to pull it down cause they only let you play it or hold it when the manager is there and the closest I could get to it was about 10 feet away. I also want to get the serial number so I can check and see if it's legit. Pretty crazy though, eh?

I hope no one on the forum knows what store you're talking about. It might not be there when you go back there wanting to buy it. :smack: :laugh2:

Re: WOW... (attn: Destroyer fans)

Look at the serial number on the head stock anything lettered A-K and then 82-85 is legit. 20+ year old guitar never sold? Wow.

I just flew cross country and bought it.....

Seriously, what's with the older folks that own music stores??? They act like their cheap stuff is a custom shop les paul. About five years ago or so I went into a local music store to check out some six string acoustics. I wanted a Fender. The lady actually let me hold the guitar, but wouldn't let me play it with a pick and I couldn't hold it anywhere near my body (even though I was only wearing a t-shirt). This was a $200 guitar by the way.

Now I'm no kid. I was in my late 30s at the time so I figured you could tell that I had respect for their product, but she just wouldn't let me play it. Was pretty nasty about it too. I even pulled out my CC and said "lady, if I like it, I'm buying it right now, but I ain't gonna buy it without a good tryout" but still no way. I never went back to that music store. Would you believe they're still there too?

These are why online stores are so popular. As much as I'd prefer to shop @ mom and pops...most mom and pops are just as you described. Not all but the majority I go into.

On a side note...I went into a shop yesterday that was charging $6.75 for EB slinky/GHS Boomer strings. I realize the logistics and difficulties of running a small retail business (overhead, employees, blah blah), but when things like that are twice the price..that's another plus for the "guitar marts".

Back to the original topic..yes..there were reissues around Y2K. DT 420 model (Edit: I THINK thats the number)..but they are bolt-on necks with a typical modern contoured Ibanez heel with "raw" maple neck (not painted). And AFAIK did not come in flamed maple tops..only black & red. There is also a fairly current (discontinued this year) DT200...mahog body ..red or walnut stain...modern contured heel.

BTMN's post is right on as far as serial numbers. Month of build= letter (I.e. "a" is January), and first two numbers denote year of manufacture.

i used to love the MOM and Son music store that was in town.. saddly they went out of business a few years ago..... the son was a little slow so the mother had to run the business mostly herself.... It was the type of shop were you could buy a used American Standard for dirt cheap and a cheap plywood guitar or a Squire for a fortune..... They never really knew 100% what they were doing..... there used to be a few pawn shops like that here as well.... they didn't know guitar gear resale value worth a dam. too bad those places are gone.

Ibanez did make a reissue according to this article: http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM02/Content/Ibanez/PR/ST420BP.html

I wish I would've known about the reissue. Set-neck and out of the same factory for $599 list sounded pretty damn reasonable.

The reissue only came in black and red. So it sounds like the one you saw could very well be NOS. How much were they asking for it?

There is a problem when it comes to price. Because you were only authorized to play it when the manager was there, you could only talk price when he was there. They asked me "how much are you looking to spend on a new guitar?", to which I laughed and said I'm not in the market for a new guitar but that one is pretty cool and if they didn't want an outrageous amount of money for it, I'd probably buy it. One of the employees said that they thought he wanted about $2K for it. I'm not sure how to feel about that price though. I need to find out for sure what he wants for it.

But I was really hoping they'd say $1,200 cause I would have whipped out the debit card right then and there :laugh2:

I thought the price was pretty high too. But keep in mind, its not mint, it's brand ******* new. Never been sold, doesn't even appear to even have been played. It truly is a guitar you'll never see again. How many 22+ year old guitars are there out there that are new old stock? That being said though, I'm not really prepared to spend 2 grand on that guitar.

Re: WOW... (attn: Destroyer fans)

Go get the blue book of electrics and see what it's "book" value is. Then see what it cost back in the day. Explain that no one else Is going to pay more for it. Explain that it can be sold at a big profit for way less than that. COme back in 6 months (STAY AWAY) and ask if he's ready to sell it. Do not let what's his name with the Destroyer Avatar know where this is!

Come back and buy it. Post pics.
