They are about equal on the bass...both hit hard and have a nice percussive bottom that works well for palm muting and fast, downtuned playing. However, they sound different to the ear because of how their tone curves are tweaked. Obviously, a pickup with more emphasis on the low-mids can sound like it has more bass when played alone than a similar pickup with emphasis on the high mids, even though they both have a solid, very pronounced bottom end. Such is the case with the Baker Act and Tyrant. Played in a mix, the difference isn't as noticable and having that upper mids emphasis helps to cut through better most of the time. However, if you are trying to figure out which is which, more low mids would be the Baker Act, while more high mids would be the Tyrant, but not by a lot.

Funny you should say that, Ed! I will probably pick up a set after the holidays! I just don't have an extra guitar to put them in (yet).
The whole Dean pickup line is really well done. It's interesting how many unique flavors Pat Baker and team have managed to conjure up over there! But, yeah, I've been itching for a set of the Schenkers for a while now...
