Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

But the Faded Gibsons are just thinner coats of the finish they normally use.

This is just as much paint, then a bunch of paint knocked / sanded off.
They may have thinner paint but, about everyone I have seen has had a major flaw or, they had a huge finish flaw so, they sanded it down and sold it as a faded.

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Paying for a pre reliced guitar? Are people stupid :eyecrazy:

I remember when I worked at the House of Guitars in Irondequoit, NY when the Gibson relics came in back in the earlyish '90s... and saw the $10k+ price tags. I said to myself, man, what a scam. Even the cigarette burns looked fake

Part of the joy of owning an instrument is the little dings, dents and finish wear you get over a period of years

That is mojo friends

Paying big bucks for a guitar dragged behind a forklift is so uncool

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Road worn and relics, I just don't get it..... If the wear happens because of "real" use, then its cool because then there's a true history & stories with the guitar.

Road worn and relics, they are like fake boobs and plastic surgery. It's just not the same as real, natural beauty.

Now + 5 to that..

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

there is a few gigging guitarists i know i could loan a new guitar to make a real relic out of them for me... their axes look like hell after 6 months on the road... mind you the one guy has a 4 year old LP Standard with at least 3 different headstock repairs!!! so maybe i had better not

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Buy a cheap used MIM Tele, or what ever Fender you like, and relic the thing yourself and save loads of money !
Why should i pay somebody to do something that i can do myself ?

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

If by doing it yourself you mean relic it by means of using it a lot then I couldn't possibly agree more.

If on the other hand you mean artificially relic it so that it appears used (or abused, your pick) in a matter of days instead of years then same difference I suppose.
It'll just look more authentic if done by a pro but it'll still be fake in the end.

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Maybe I'm way off here...have you noticed that the "relic" stuff is all about aesthetics and rarely have premium assesories (pickup, electronics, etc...) included in the package? I'm thinking that the intended market are with non-musicians looking for a "cool" conversation piece to hang on the wall in their den.

Maybe they will market ratty, cigarette burnt "59 Bassman's as endtables.

Hey, that Marshall 4-12 would make a nice ottoman too!

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Being a fan of relic'd looking guitars myself, all I can say when I see someone playing some pointy all black BC Rich or some PRS with gold hardware these days is "are people stupid" ?

Its all relative man. Either you like a mirrorlike gloss finish or maybe you like a nice dull "satin" finish.

When I paint my guitars I like them to look nice and flat.

Some people like shiney 24k gold jewerly full of "bling" Others like a nice dull finish that doesnt sparkle or shine at all on their wedding band or watch.

My watch is titanium finish and rather matte looking for those who car

If I was building a hotrod I'd also paint it flat black, probably with bbq grill paint lol

Last thing I want to ever do is see my reflection in my car hood, or jewelry or my guitar

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

...I wonder if fans of Relics relic their cars and their homes? Hmmm.....good call!

in a way... my dad is a hot rodder and some of the guys in his Hot Rod club build these amazing rods but finnish them to look old and beat up... some even just spray them with primer grey and that is it.... some do the Closet Classic style of finnish were they crack the finnish to make it look old...

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

Problem with all of those is that when you look at them, it looks like the exact same wear patterns on every one, so now the "relic" you have is the same one that 5000 other people have. Lame.

Its a very good point and one of the problems with any mass produced "relic" thats done on an assembly line.

A good "relic" is done with some thought behind in, not just instructions to "beltsand this part" lol

Where your corroding the hardware for example, you need to think about where your hand might make contact and wear down only those parts.

You need to look at where your forearm actually would contact the guitar and wear the finish there.

When I do mine I actually do all the little dents and dings using real on stage gear.

When I put a chip in the headstock, its actually from a turning with the guitar on the strap and clipping a mic stand for example. Thats what gives a good relic a look thats actually convincing

Beltsanders and car keys aren't very realistic because even if you play it every day for 40 years, I doubt your going to bump into a running belt sander lol

Re: Wow. Fender Road Worn Guitars!

relics. real relics: cracks, ugly dents, and multiple breaks and fixes in the headstock. that head just keeps breakin' off. hard to tell the airlines to carefully handle luggage. none of that faded scraped paint nonsense.
