Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

Sorry if this is old news, but it looks like the Squier '51 is back in production: Squier '51

I've always loved these for their simple, clean design. But they discontinued the Squier version, and the Fender Pawn Shop version was a little rich for my blood. Looks like it's back. Although, not available in very many places yet.

I may need to snag one of these while they're here. ;)

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

It is and the new run is quite nice. A sunburst is on my list, too.

I've been torturing an old '51 for a while and compared to that, the sunburst I tested some time ago feel a little more refined, more towards the Fender Pawn Shop line. I don't know what was changed, maybe it's just the CNC machine :) I guess it is good in most players book. My old one feels raw like an AK47 machine gun.

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

I remember when these came out in the mid 2000's and I do like the simplicity of these guitars. I love the blonde telecaster type...time to get another Squier!:fest6:

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

looks like a liteweight tele clone with more comfy body shape

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

those were like a cult classic when they came out. Amazing how much love they got for as cheap as they were. bet these are more expensive. but they do look more refined. Squier's vintage modified line is very good. I need another guitar like I need a hole in the head, but I would like to get a good cheap axe that I can haul around and jam on when I get a minute or two without worries of weather, theft or what have you. get one of these and put a duncan distortion in it.. haha Just not fan of sunburst

just went to break. looks like they have addl colors!! Run about $179ish. funny.. some of the old ones are being listed for $3-400 and touting them as "First run classics!"

I think the 51 is a modern classic and I am glad to see they are back in production.

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

That is definitely a stylin HS guitar. Weren't those only $99 in their first run?

I never cared for those guitars until I saw this pic, that is pretty sweet!

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

A Fender dealer very close to where I live has an MIJ Fender '51 that he has been unable to shift. Ho, hum. :scratchch

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

I made a mention of it a few months back when I saw it on squier's site and all I got was sh*t for it.

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

Looks kinda cool, except that pick guard is the most atrocious thing I've ever seen. I don't care how it sounds, how it plays, how it feels, how much it costs...that thing is a deal breaker. Totally.

Yeah . . . to be honest, I don't quite "get" the pickguard thing. The trailing edge doesn't match up to anything. Still, the pickguard wouldn't be that hard to modify.

Are you nuts??? That pickguard on that lovely Squier '51 is actually avant garde and very well-balanced. It flows with the body and gives the guitar some added elegance. I think it's one of the best pick guards designed in centuries. I think you need new bifocals or something.:22: If you want to talk about atrocious pick guards, I think this picture below takes the cake...in more layers than one.;)

Ahem, HALLELUJAH!

As your resident Squier '51 superfan, I'm all for it.

And now a pictorial retrospective of my old '51:

Replacing... everything (Little '59, GFS Mean 90, GFS bridge):

Adding a 3-way toggle and a tone potentiometer (God, was this a pain in the ass):

Frets dressed, edges filed, new TUSQ nut cut:

That version can be heard here:

Then I got fancy with pickups and switches and stuff - this combo gave 14 unique options:

That version can be heard here:

Then I had a deep Eric Gales appreciation phase, and I flipped the nut on this one and made it an eBGDAE guitar, which, looking back was a colossal waste of time . I never had a chance of learning to play this way:

Then I mailed my P-Rails and Triple Shot to astrozombie for some reason... I kind of wish I hadn't now, because it was good in that guitar. Now it sits in a case with no pickups in it, awaiting a full redo. I think I'll go back to the Mean 90 and Little '59.

But I have to fill some wood before then - taking the control cavity on and off of a guitar made out of super sh.tty wood took it's toll and there's noting to screw the control plate to any more.

God I love these guitars. Mine is very "alive." Vibrates a lot when you play.

^^
Now that was a good demo.;) The tones seem endless with what you had set up, especially the extra switching on the bridge pickup ring. The guitar does sound bright and resonant in the video. What better can you ask for?:)

Re: Wow! Is the Squier '51 back?

I think they're really cool guitars but, once again, there's no lefty version, so ****'em.

I think a thinline version with an f-hole would look (and probably sound) pretty great.
