today at my guitar lesson i learned the harmonic minor scale. As me and my teacher jammed he told me to blend the pentatonic and the harmonic scales together for a solo and I as i was doing it, i thought to myself...this is what it feels like to really play...wow. I made my guitar SING. i was so happy :D so for the next 8 hours im gonna be playing these scales together till my fingers bleed!

that's cool - it's a great feeling when something like that really clicks :)

yea i know lol, now that i can kinda do what he does i find it not as intense.

harmonic minor and natural minor can sound cool over a jazz progression, like this:

D half-diminished minor 7th

G 7

C m7

you can play a C minor scale over this and do C harmonic minor over the G 7 and D half-diminished minor 7th.

harmonic minor works in this case because the G 7 would normally be a minor chord but in this case it's major.

Not sure of the scales, but I read a quote from him once that said he always tries to simplify and use only two fingers whenever he can. I found that it made playing the easier stuff (early albums - not including solos) much better.

Awesome dude.

Now learn the other 6 modes of the harmonic minor scale!! And your mind will get blown 6 more times!!! They are wicked sounds.

The mode names:
Harmonic Minor, Locrian Sharp 6, Ionian Sharp 5, Dorian Sharp 4, Phrygian Dominant, Lydian Sharp 2, and Super Locrian bb7

Also try the melodic minor - it has that spicy Sharp 7 but doesn't have that wide interval leap from the Flat 6 to the Sharp 7 that makes the harmonic minor so classical sounding.
