Wow, Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits

I've never seen this dude play a pedal steel before. He's amazing. What a guitarist. Most pedal steel depresses me to the point of near-suicide (my anticountry rant).

RR is the man!

I saw him open for Clapton this fall and I've seen him on the late show, I love this guy. You should see his rendition of Voodoo Child.

Re: Wow, Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits

the thing I love - he's a great player who gets a kick out of playing, lets it show, and his "good vibe" is contagious

Re: Wow, Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits

He's able to grab so many note choices that are difficult for a 6 string. That's what gives him the edge.

Re: Wow, Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits

He is great. And there's more out there who can play the stuff. Do a search for "Sacred Steel".

Re: Wow, Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits

The guy's chops are tremendous, but like Curly said, the guy's just having such a fun time and getting everyone else into it.

That's one of my favorite episodes of Austin City Limits. Need to see if I can get a tape of it.

The "Live at the Wetlands" disc is killer...his studio album, "Declassified" was okay but not nearly as good as Wetlands. I think the band is just so huge live that a clean cut studio album just doesn't sound quite "right."

Yeah...good advice.

The steel guitar is used by guys like Aubrey Ghent and Robert Randolph in church. Hence: "Sacred Steel" Originally both of those guys played mostly for church services.

Aubrey's a preacher....expect a little preaching when you listen to his CD's.

Olabelle covered one of his tunes (Ain't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus) on thier Columbia CD. Also highly recommended!

Re: Wow, Robert Randolph on Austin City Limits

Living in Texas, we are overwhelmed with steel pedal players. The biggest problem is that 99.999999999% of it is Country. Like they say, we have two kinds of music in these here part, country *and* western. :(

But, thank GOD, Austin is only an hour and a half away!

These guys play stuff that I like to hear. The C/W stuff makes me want to cry in my beer.
