WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

.......... I picked up a Love Pedal Woody in trade and opened it up to see about putting a 9V tap on it and this is what I got....

Wonder why there is no external 9V tap?

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

Do I see that stomper leaning against a butterscotch Tele?!

HAHAHA!!!

I know some old-skool fuzz & dirt pedals freak-out when running off AC & can't be modded for an adapter... could just be part of the design.

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

^^^ Maybe you do...maybe you don't......but more than likely.......maybe you Do is the case....

Oh and I realize that this is probably a pretty standard pedal with not so secret components, but it is funny how this dude wants no one knowing JUST what....

Goopy.

Sometimes I think pedal builders goop circuits to prevent others from finding out it is based on another builders circuit. But they also can try to protect it from cloning.

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

It's a blob of epoxy and it's to prevent people from building cheap clones (and partially also to prevent people from realizing they've paid $300 for $5 worth of components). It's mostly done by boutique builders who charge ridiculous amounts of money for what is really a simple circuit. Klon is another one that does this.

You;re not paying for the parts...

You're paying for the parts, the desighn, the work that went into the design, the work that went into the built, the name on the front, the logo, etc, etc, etc...

It's all like that...a CS Strat doesn't cost 2k to build, neither does a Marshall...

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

^^^^^BTW.... Mind if I stop by and give this thing a whirl after work for a few seconds? I gots no working guitars at the moment!^^^^^^

Oh yeah, I agree with that. People will pay what they believe a product is worth - what it costs to make it is irrelevant.

I just can't help but notice that the pedals with epoxy on the circuits are inevitably the ones that charge premium prices. It's because the builder knows that anyone with a soldering iron and a rudimentary knowledge of electrical components can replicate their circuit for a tiny fraction of their price. It's a lot harder to clone a CS Strat or a Marshall head than it is to clone a Klon Centaur (epoxy notwithstanding) by a long shot. If it weren't for the epoxy, these boutique pedal builders would be out of business, or would have to slash their prices. The only reason they can charge what they do is because it's too hard to clone their circuits.

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

Just protecting their intellectual property. Even when they don't goop up the circuit, a lot of the boutique builders will Sharpie the ICs and transistors so it's difficult to clone.

Regarding the adapter, as J Moose said, a lot of positive ground and PNP transistor based pedals really don't work with the 9V adapter.

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

To be honest all ye gents......there is nothing new out there!!
And I personally would never buy anything that is gooped up like that....
What if the POS died one day??
What then???
Pray that the guy is still in buisness or wants to repair it???
Sean makes good pedals.....just somewhat expensive...you're basicly buying a hyped piece of simple electronic circuit, that anyone with a decent set of ears and some knowledge of electronics can make!
And be willing to try a few not so common ways of setting stuff together, a love for experiments and well....
Boutique is fun...but the price is just....well crazy!
It is not exactly rocketscience!

I can see this being very true Rid. I got this as part of an already sweet deal. I doubt it will become a mainstay on my board, but was cool to pick up basically for free.

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

I've always contemplated selling pedals when I have free time as an experiment. The experiment would be having absolutely no marketing hype or sales pitches. No gooping circuits, and actually INCLUDING a schematic and layout with the pedal (so if something goes wrong, any competent guitar tech could repair it). I bet you I wouldn't sell a **** thing! HAHAHAHA! "this pedal is made using 4 resistors for biasing purposes, a 2N2222 transistor for extra distortion (dont worry if it goes, you can get one NOS at radioshack for like 15 cents), 2 input and output capacitors, and an emitter-bypass capacitor. Its made on perfboard and took me like 20 minutes to build the whole pedal, and probably cost me about $25 in parts, give or take. BUY IT NOW FOR ONLY $250!

HAHAHAHA!!!

Man, I remember back in the day... just about EVERY piece of recording gear was overbuilt and came with a set of schematics, parts list & block diagrams...

Consoles. Tape machines, compressors... EQ's... reverbs...

Not so anymore.

Not even the inexpensive stuff, but the $2000 per channel stuff too!

Granted, most competant techs probably could fix things without a schematic...but geez. It's nice to know that if there's a problem down the road it's gonna be easy, or at least easier to fix.

Hey, I'd buy some stompboxes with schematics!

I love schematics!!!

Too bad I'm kinda dangerous with a soldering iron!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Re: WOW! Talk about a secret pedal design.....

I HATE BOUTIQUE PRICES BUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTT

I think there are some good things

1) These guys are often making money and reinvesting it in the guitar market

2) The profitability means more of the CREAM OF THE CROP get out there and build and market innovative ideas - for me the ENTIRE BOGNER LINE fits into this mold.

3) Thanks to the popularity of the whole market you can get GREAT sounds with a TUBE RIG that costs $500 out the door if you get a Pacifica Strat, Peavey / Crate Tube Amp and a Boss or Ibanez pedal.

Then, you could spend thousands and still sound great, but also find YOUR sound and feel.

Considering I play some decently nice gear, I can't complain about boutiques. If not for them we would all be playing DS1's through Carvin half stacks - which works for some but not for me.
