wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
after literally YEARS of building up... screwing up... sanding back to square-one... re-staining...
building up... screwing up... sanding back to square-two...
building up... screwing up... sanding back to square-three...
building up... screwing up... sanding back to square-one... restaining...
building up... screwing up... sanding back to square-four...

ad nauseum

i have finally perfected my tru-oil, high gloss finishing method. and boy oh boy is it ever glossy.
oh my, i couldn't even enumerate all the problems i've encountered, and screw-ups i committed.
what are those "rings" that occur when you have different amounts of layers built up? well, i figured out how to correct for those.
no foggy spots
spot touch-ups... check, got that down and blended in.

this has been YEARS!!! and i am so freak'n happy.
i saw pictures of other people's high gloss finishes, and i always thought "how the hell do they do it?" because i could never get there.
now i have.

i think next time i'll do an even better job. if its possible.

Tru-Oil is awesome. I used it on an Ibanez Wizard II neck a few years ago, and despite the lousy job I did, it's still a pretty nice finish.

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

i would take pictures, but i've already spammed this forum so much with this guitar.
ok, i'll post pictures of its watery reflection soon

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

i never, ever thought i could get it this shiny. finesse-it 2 did the trick

Thats nice man.

Give me a quick run down of the process please?

Very nice. Me, I'm on umpteenth coat of Min-wax, but it has been finished with 3000 grit. One more coat and I'll hit it with 3000 and then 5000. I will get there.

quick? ok here ya go

on bare wood, in dust-free environment, i just laid on layer after layer. i could start out with a pretty thick coat, cuz it would just soak into the wood. i've heard of people prepping bare wood with shellac(?) so it doesn't soak in. i would wipe on 2-3 coats in a day. then wait a couple days. steel wool it
do 2-3 coats. wait. steel wool.
so on and so forth.
over time, as the oil builds up i used thinner coats. to a point where i was diluting with mineral spirits (i think, maybe turpentine?).

then i let it sit for a week or 2 and used the finesse-it 2. just a tooth paste size amount on a clean rag. smear it into the rag and then start rubbing the finish.
it took about 3 applications of finesse-it to get it where it is. you don't want to rub TOO hard though. and you don't want to apply the finesse-it directly to the guitar.
i didn't do and dry, or wet sanding

i had really bad problems with those visible lines between different layers. i don't remember what those are called, but i found they were easy to fix once i figured out how

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

The lines you describe are "witness" lines. They show the layers of finish that you have sanded through

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

that's why I french polish my guitars with shellac. no witness lines. just as glossy, and way, way faster. I can get a guitar to high gloss with 2 days of hard work.

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

that's kick ass!!

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

D@mn Snoogles, that is GLOSSY! Looks Beautiful man, good job!

Re: wow Wow WOW... so freak'n happy with the Tru-oil high gloss treatment

I'm getting ready to wet sand with 3000 grit leading into 5000. 7000 is being saved up for the final polish. Then maybe carnauba wax.
