wrong guitar for style xyz

There are many threads like "which PU/guitar/amp do you recommend for style xyz"

I wonder what you guys think about playing some kind of music with an axe nobody else would use for that style.
E.g. I already played live gigs country with an archtop jazz guitar, bigband/swing with tele and rockabilly with steelstring acoustic (ok, I was forced to do that because I broke the other guitar).

What about using the "wrong" pickups (anything different than forum members would recommend)?

Playing with a wrong axe having the wrong tone always forced me do play anything different than I would do with the right instrument making my playing much less foreseeable (also for me) and much more creative.

Your opinions/experiences?
Chris

death metal with a squier strat through a digitech RP 100 and a bass amp... i've done that one lol

sounded... crap to say the least ;)

Re: wrong guitar for style xyz

i think you can do most anything w/ any guitar, might not sound the greatest but you can. i have jsut gotten a "good" start and started off w/ a jackson so i was on my way w/ the metal axes, but my friend started off w/ a squire affinity, Digitech RP100 and the 20W squire amp and he did fine. once you find your style you buy your gear.

Right.

Who would be fool enough to play an upside down Stratocaster with his teeth?

Who would be fool enough to put a lefty tremelo on a righty Strat and play blues?

Who would be fool enough to take a perfectly good strat, paint it all ugly red, black and white, take out the pups and duct tape some goofy humbucker in place and put a Kramer neck on?

Who would think of playing hard rock and roll with a Byrdland and a loin cloth?

I'm starting to think it's more in the hands and attitude than the guitar and pickups.
