I'm on the look out for a used Les Paul Custom
not too bothered about cosmetic condition. i'd prefer solid colour than burst. i'm also looking at around $1500 - $2100 shipped and paypalled.
if you guys have one you want to offload or know of someone, let me know.

I'm also looking on the bay.

cheers!

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

I have a 1977 Black Custom. Excellent guitar.

Good luck with finding one, but you really should do some research because there are huge variations in Customs over time. I specifically wanted a solid body with a maple neck and got one.

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

Not trying to hijack but..
Ive owned an 81 , 83 and I have a 01' custom shop 57 Custom( 2pup)
The 81 had maple for sure cause you could see through the play wear, the 83 not sure about.Transitional years I think, Norlin etc..
I sold both of these and am in love with my 57 I know theres not a drop of maple in it.
The 57 custom shops are awesome and kinda under the radar I think for now.
For a few hundy more you could score one of those and be done.
(Side note both the 80's models were boat anchors in weight, the 81 =10lbs and the 83=11.5 lbs! The 57 is around 9lbs.)
Anyway if I can be of assistance on your quest please let me know,I have already traveled that road.Good Luck!

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

i'm considering one of those 57s. i'm also looking at a 1981 natural finish custom. looks really nice. i once had to 1976 customs and i have forever regretted offloading them.

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

I've had a 72 in black, not sure what the top was, and I have an 04 now with a maple cap. I love the newer one alot more than I ever liked the 72.

Careful with the 57 RI. A whole lot of people come to guitar forums urgently asking for help in fixing the too dark sound.

But, in all honesty, wouldn't you think it would
be easier to "pick-up" a guitar with darker tendencies
than one that's bright. I dunno?

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

well, the reissue i was looking at was taken down by the seller. maybe he had second thoughts. it was $2299. doable.

Well, if the high frequencies aren't there you can't boost them.

Anyway, the bigger point here was the warning that the '57 RI is probably the one expensive guitar where I have seen the most sound-dissatisfied owners. People but the '57 because they want a Black Beauty and get something they don't want sound-wise.

Sounds like this would be a definite try and see
sort ot situation, fer sure.

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

well, i'm not sure i'll be able to. i am probably going to end up buying off ebay short of someone here who comes up with a tried and true lester. the playability isn't my only concern. fakes are also an issue. i have an interesting one at the moment; $1899 for a 90 Custom in white. serial 0 0952. checked with gibson support and that is the serial for a classic in cherry sunburst. i emailed the seller to verify the serial.

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

i've also thought - F it and go for a Les Paul Classic Custom in Silverburst. they've got one here at the local GC.

They do indeed, and I did too. However, the guitar itself is acoustically bright, loud and resonant, it was the '57 classic pick ups were the problem. I have a Brobucker/ 59n in mine and it's superb. Weight wise it's about he same as my standard wheras my mates white '89 custom is about 30kg's heavier! Ok, slight exageration... but it is alot heavier! :friday:

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

I dont think my 57 is too dark at all,It is very full across the tonal spectrum, it maybe lacks a bit of presence in the higher freqs, but who cares.. if I wanted that sort of tone I'd get me a strat type guitar and string it with 8's.

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

I never had an intention to say that all 57 RI Customs are dark in absolute terms, and even less to say that there aren't people who like them, both ways.

But since we are talking 2-3 Kilodollars here I thought the warning is in order: a '57 RI is a "play before you buy" guitar if you want just a pretty Les Paul, more so than other guitars.

Re: WTB Gibson Les Paul Custom

well, i guess the wait begins; he is shipping from AZ so i'm thinking 4 business days. hope he ships tomorrow.

I agree TOTALLY ,Ive vowed to NEVER buy a guitar again without playing it first.Ive come across some less than lively LP's and have learned my lesson.
I actually lucked out and found my 57' by accident locally. It was one of those meant to be guitars, I walked in saw it, played it and then had to figure out how to buy it!
Compared to my 58' it is a little darker but has more grunt and sounds a bit "meaner"
