WTT: Peavey VTM 120 in EXCELLENT condition for 5150

I'm looking to trade my 99.99% new condition 1989 Peavey VTM 120 for any Peavey 5150 or 5150II. I will pay to ship both amps from point A to point B. I'm also accepting other offers. :)

I know this sounds really silly since the 5150 is worth a lot more, but I'll take one in terrible condition in trade. Even if it doesn't work right now, if it's fixable, I'll take it. I don't mind putting in a little elbow grease to make an amp sing again. :D

My VTM is a really rare amp in the condition it's in. It's from 1989 and has barely been used at all. In the 20 years of its existence, it has only been used for 60 hours, tops.

*Skip this section if you don't care about the story of the amp* I got a hold of it a couple years ago from a friend who had it stored in his house since his dad got it in 1989. The story I was told was that one of his dad's friends bought it for his dad after he spilled a beer on his combo amp. It was never used in his house since his dad never got around to buying a cab for the amp and couldn't afford to after the birth of my friend (blasted kids!). The amp pretty much sat in his dad's room ever since then until I walked in and stumbled on it. Being an ampless guitar player (and that my friend was satisfied with his amp), the family gave the amp to me. I somehow managed to get my hands on my Orange before I ever got around to using this amp. I finally set it up (and replaced the original tubes) early last year to give it a test run.

I'm the only person to ever use this amp and it's only been in active duty since February 2008, and vary sparingly at that. It's been used for one band practice in its entire career and has been used very rarely at bedroom levels since. I would play it whenever I wanted to try a different tone but was too lazy to go to the music store and play with fun gadgets. Collectively, with the band practice and the home usage up to this point, I would say the amp has only been used for about 20 hours, not including the past few days. I've recently been playing with it a lot to see if I actually want to keep it around or sell it. I've decided that I don't really have much of a use for this amp... It's a great sounding amp for classic 70's and 80's tones, but it's not really voiced for my style of music.

*Continue reading here if you left earlier* This amp is voiced well for more vintage style tones, really. It can get a great 70's, almost Hendrixy kind of tone out of the low gain section and it can make some great thrash sounds with the high gain section. The amp has 8 dipswitches which can activate a couple different gain and EQ settings for the amp, as well as a built in compressor. Using the EQ and dipswitches I've found that I can really dial in some great classic rock, classic metal, thrash metal, and old school punk tones from this amp. The amp doesn't have a real clean channel, but you can use the low gain input to get some nice (although slightly fuzzy) cleanish tones. Another nice feature of the head is that it has outputs for 16, 8, 4, and 2 ohm cabs.

The amp does have a huge problem for me, though, and that's its inability to handle low tunings very well... and I play in C-Standard. It seems to me that my C string palm mutes seem to turn to mush a bit on this amp, but it seems to handle my standard tuned guitar with ease. As a side note: The C guitar is a very dark sounding guitar and the E is brighter, so that might have had a part in the mud. In either case, I love my main guitar more than this amp (since I have a much nicer Rockerverb), so I think I'm gonna have to let it go.

I have the original wire pannel to cover the tube opening and the original plate that covers the dipswitch and both will be shipped out with the head.

I guess this trade would be geared to either someone who has a spare 5150 that they're not using or someone who likes their 5150, but would like something a bit more vintage in tone. It could also cater to someone who broke their 5150 and is too lazy to fix it. :D

The manual for the amp can be found here. It explains, in depth the effects of the dipswitches among other things.

Drop me a PM if you are interested in the amp. Leave a post here if you have any questions.

Re: WTT: Peavey VTM 120 in EXCELLENT condition for 5150

Best of luck with that deal. You'd be better off trading the VTM in on one of the new Peavey Vyper all tubes amp. I picked up a 120w tube combo, has the 6505, JSX, Recto etc... and a bunch of others and sounds dead on. Great modeling section that puts Line6 and others in for a dirt nap

They also are getting rave ratings from whoever buys one

I may know where a blown 5150 is but I believe he's attempting the repair himself, I will check
