XITS amps. What's the hype about?

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

You're only excited because of the prospect of flipping an amp in less than 30 minutes!
hahaha

As for PRS amps. They sound as bad as they look. This will be PRS's second failure at the amp market....no doubt in my mind.

Didnt know they had a first run.. I cant even look at the PRS amps or accoustics.. WAY too pricey.. I dont figure the amps would give me the dirt I like.
I find it hard to believe Warren Haynes would abandon an slo for one.

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

Xits are the old flavor of the month. What you NEED is a 3 Monkeys amp, oh wait... that was a few months ago as well. Ah! I know! I think you NEED a Morgan amp, those are the best Vox amps. Don't buy a Vox because those are garbage, the boutique alternatives sound better than the originals and are built 10x better.

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

To be fair, a "look" can contribute to a mystique that sells gear. It just has to be the right look.

Guitarists are about as pragmatic as rock instrumentalists can be, and while the Xits amps are certainly different-looking, they're different-looking in a 1920s art-deco, electronic appliance-kind of way that isn't really that removed from classic tube equipment designs we're all used to.

Their aesthetic is much more of a remix than a complete design overhaul, so while they seem new and exciting to the people buying them, there's something undeniably familiar (and hence, safe) about their appearance that appeals to consumers.

Conversely

Everything I've ever heard about your guitars (which I myself have not had the opportunity to play) is that they are excellently built, toneful, well-balanced instruments that can go toe-to-toe with any other guitar and hold their own at the very least.

But most of them look like spaceships that crashed into airstream trailers.

And that's scary to a guitar player that views askance anything not resembling a Les Paul or Nocaster reissue.

PERSONALLY

I think many of them are beautiful.

This one in particular - wow:

I don't know how well the hipshot baby grand bridge suits a lot of the models - seems like you could design a bridge/tailpiece yourself that matches a lot better, but I'm in no position to quibble over the design sense of the guy who envisioned this thing:

JBD-Green-back-full.gif
JBD-Green-flat-front.gif

...which is really just stunningly-awesome-looking... But it's also freaky-looking to many guitarists when they think about strapping one on in front of an audience. An amp is just an inert thing that sits behind you and makes noise. A guitar is an extension of your body. It's an entirely different medium and presents a lot more risk to your average consumer re: appearance.

I'd love to see your designs continue to take off and make waves in the boutique guitar market because, frankly, I'm sooo tired of the strat clones and slightly-differently-shaped Les Pauls that most builders sell to the TGP crowd, but as I'm sure you're aware, it's a hard nut to crack.

While I totally hear where your coming from.. I can't help but chuckle a little because I get to play these daily and they always amaze me how comfortable and balanced they feel.

The JBD-800 ( the first photo of the Sunburst) is really not far from a Strat in design and feel at all... while the JBD-100 ( 2nd photo) although it may look strange, is more comfortable than a real strat when played in a standing/strapped on position. ( I love playing this one sitting on the couch) yet it has all the Touch and Nuance of a Les Paul on Tonality and Playability. and without that "butt gump" of a neck. ( Sorry, once had a customer describe a LP neck from the 16th fret forward as "Butt Gump" and its stayed with me ever since.)

One of the main reasons for building these designs, was that even though I only originally saw them in 2D form. ( John Backlund's Original drawings)

I instantly recognized the fact that they WOULD be ergonomically viable... it really surprizes me that so many don't , or maybe can't, see that as well..

I'm hopeing maybe once everyone gets a chance to play them.. things will be different..

Anyways, J.Backlund Designs will be doing our best to hit as many Guitar Shows as possible this year, so that folks will have a chance to play them.

and FWIW. I'm in line for an Xits amps as well.

Lately, the PWE Event Horizon has been one of the flavors of the year. I will admit, it's a good-looking amp head. If I was a rich guy, perhaps I'd have one. I'll just have to live with my lowly Bogner XTC.

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

I never thought they "looked" all that great to me.. kinda like someone ran down to the local fabric store and found some remnants to cover his amp with.

my sentiments exactly. . .looks like 60s era tacky project material. .

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

one of the ugliest amps i have ever seen..no wait...it is the ugliest amp i have ever seen.......hope they sound better than they look.....i wouldnt touch this thing....and i have never heard of them.

I've never even been aware of your guitars. Today was the first time that I had seen or heard of any of them. Wonder how many others are in my situation?

Back on topic, I just cannot get over the name "Xits." Even if the Xits people claim that it's pronounced "exits;" it's still just goofy.

Maybe you misread my post - I said that, by all reports, your guitars are ergonomic and well-balanced, though I myself have not yet been exposed to one in-person.

Looking at the designs, it's not surprising to me that they would balance and play comfortably. The contours and silhouettes seem intuitively human-friendly.

I look forward to seeing more from your company!

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

Xits are boutique Vox flavored amps; some more flavored than others. If you want Vox tones from a handbuilt amp then Xits is the brand.

I'm no flavor-of-the-month boutique gear junkie, but those guitars are pretty "sexy" to my eyes. And I'm normally a meat & potato Strat/LP kind of guy. The curves and "flow" is just so enticing to me. Alas, part of the reason that I'm a meat & potatoes kind of guy is that my budget is generally that. I've been gigging for 24 years, but only this past year did I feel I was able to afford something so yesterday's-boutique as Bogner amps. So it's doubtful that I'll have one of those fine-looking guitars in my hands anytime soon. But I envy the guys who will! :1:

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

What is amazing to me about these lower wattage amps... is the price!
I guess it's all about demand....
The transformers are not as expensive and there may be a lot fewer parts involved... say like a Maserati GT...
And they would be quicker to build too...

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

I dont really care for the design that much cause It wouldnt look good after a few weeks coming on and off stages. But my new flavor of the week is either DR. Z or Goodsell

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

Initial impressions for small builders is visual. You never get a 2nd chance at a 1st Impression, ya know? If it looks weird or butt ugly, you often never get a 2nd look, much less a sonic impression which is what it's all about anyway.

Re: XITS amps. What's the hype about?

Hey - XITS X4 owner here. 'Had it since '09. Delish. Clean, WARM tube sound through Celestion Greenback, with tube vibrato to boot. Tons of bottom, but rich, not just a big bump @ 100 hz. Here's a link to the bigger brother of my amp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGpIRj6MZTM Great amp for reasonable money IMHO...
