Xmas break first pedal build...

Xmas break means a bit more time (so actually time) to build. Got another one on the bench, waiting for paint to dry fully, then labels and clear coats...

In the meanwhile, here's the first one: MXR M173 Classic 108 fuzz without the fancy buffer... That way, it's pretty much a fuzzface built around BC 108 Si transistors.

I used BC108Bs instead of BC108Cs (didn't have "C"s stashed around). It gives it a "spongier" tone to my ears. Nice and a bit more vintage in my mind...softer. It's therefore a bit warmer than the original as well.
I've tried BC109s and MPSA18 but I preferred the smoother attack of the 108s.

The enclosure was painted red, oversprayed with a mist of yellow, taped and then painted dark blue. Removed the tape and voilà... I make the tape a bit less sticky in order to avoid pulling off the previous coats of paint. I may have overdone it a bit and there was some paint that got under the tape in some places... Looks a bit less clean. Nice accident since I like it like that. Don't mind the gap between the back plate and the body in the last pic, it's not screwed tight since I'm waiting a couple more days to avoid the clear coats sticking together...

Oh yeah: red led on this one.

No gut shots... sorry.

Hope you guys like it.

Re: Xmas break first pedal build...

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! Always appreciated. It's just so much fun doing this.
The next pedal is being debugged as we speak. Kinda tricky, I have no idea what's wrong with it... I'll keep you all posted.

Re: Xmas break first pedal build...

That looks awesome! Can you take shot straight on from the top? Looks like a face! :)

Re: Xmas break first pedal build...

TO: I'll try to snap one today.
Kam: I'll get one while I'm at it.
Was: gracias!

Ok,

Here's the full frontal shot for Twighlight:

And the gut shot for Kamanda:

New thread coming up for new builds too!

Re: Xmas break first pedal build...

If you look closely, you'll see some whitish squares. Those are some squares of double-sided sticky-foam that stick the pcb to the back of the pots.
Those are pretty much superfluous since solid-core wire is usually enough to avoid any movement (the rigidity is strong enough when you place everything strategically) but it's a nice assurance that nothing will move ever...

I'm curious; how is the PCB being supported on this one? Is it held up by the pots, or do you have some kind of stand-off pillars underneath there?

Re: Xmas break first pedal build...

Looks good. Post some sound clips so we can hear it. It'd be interesting to hear the SI transistors on a fuzz face.

I'd love to (especially since you're not the first one to ask for clips... ;)) but I'm not equipped (nor do I have the playing skills or the patience) to adequately record clips... sorry about that. However, I'll say that most of what I build (99.9%) are clones of known pedals. Anything I build there usually are tons of demos on youtube already (go check out the mxr m173 classic 108 for this build) and you'll hear this pedal. Of course there's the 108b vs. 108c thing but it's still IMHO subtle so no huge difference.
