Yamaha magnet type

I have yamaha Pacifica pac112x that I'm using as a project guitar. I wasn't using the pickup so decided to take it apart to check the magnet. I noticed that it is double the size of other magnets I have gotten from waymore ( A8s and ceramic). Anybody know what kind of oversized mag this is?

Looks just like that, thanks. So it's a oversized ceramic. Are they any good? Was thinking of putting it in my JB to make a distortion.

Re: Yamaha magnet type

alnico is a grade of tool steel
they are magnetized and hold it fairly well
you could probably get them in any size but they are most commonly in the size shown
in the magnetized steel the size isn't as important as the grade or composition of the metal as that determines how strong the magnetic field is

at least this is my understanding

Re: Yamaha magnet type

i don't think its going to be easy to find an alnico magnet that size. most common size is the humbucker size
if the magnet is strong & powerful its probably an C8
you can put it in your JB with something under your keeper & spacer equal to the extra thickness of the bigger magnet

Re: Yamaha magnet type

I just want to 100% sure that its ceramic before i install it into a pickup. Any good ways of figuring out what kind of magnet it is?

Re: Yamaha magnet type

it is ceramic ,most of Korean & chinese guitars have big c8 magnets with the north side painted with that whitish gray paint
also alnico is a conductor of electricity , ceramic is not if you got a multi meter you can do a easy test of the 2

Re: Yamaha magnet type

Say what? That would be like putting a two stroke engine into a Ferrari. Please do not do it.

Re: Yamaha magnet type

I was under the impression that all magnets (of the same kind) were pretty much the same regardless of what pup they come out of? Was I wrong?

Re: Yamaha magnet type

no you just got to try them , and magnets from cheapies ,well some of the Korean magnets are ok similar to magnets from suppliers ,what you but the older china ceramic i have tried are crap

Re: Yamaha magnet type

In ceramic magnet making, contrary to Alnico making, the difference in sound from the nastiest and cheapest to the more exepensive ones is minimal.

However, putting that in a p'up that was not designed to have one of those, it'll alter the whole magnetic structure in a not good way, if you ask me. But it could be what you're looking for, so don't mind me, just try it.

It'll turn that JB into an Air Norton-ish kinda hybrid... I don't think it'll sound good, but as I've said before, it might be just what you're looking for.

If I was you, the first thing I'll try with that JB is to put a Roughcast A2 magnet, or an UnOriented A5, if you're looking for the Metal vibe. The heaviest will be an A8, but it was too much of a good thing for my taste... but again, I don't play Metal.

I don't like the sound of ceramic magnets, and I wouldn't even touch one of those extra-thick ones... even though they have a sense in certain designs like the Dirty Fingers or the 500T.

HTH,
