Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

That would be EMGs... I would recommend either SA/SA/85 or the equivalent X models.

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

What do you think about Duncan distortion in the bridge position?

Would it make a big difference in sound?

I now have budget to change the humbucker only,so do you have more humbucker suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

For MoP: Invader.

For AJFA: distortion or BW.

For the singels, I dunno.

JB, Distortion or Custom would work in the bridge. You could also try a Little Screamin Demon for the neck instead of a JB Jr.

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

Will new pickups greatly improve the sound of my guitar?

Yes. The PAC112 is built down to a price point. The woodwork is as good as models costing twice as much. Pickups, electronics and hardware are the corners that have been cut to keep the MRSP down. Hence, American pickups and control circuitry will bring sonic/tonal improvements.

Based on recent experience of installing Gibson pickups into a PAC311H, I suggest that any humbucker with a ceramic magnet and a DC resistance figure in the region of 14 - 16k should do the business. If your budget is tight, Duncan Designed HB103B, SC-101M and HR-101N pickups should prove adequate.

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

Parallel Axis should also be on your radar... both the Distortion and regular models. The stacked humbuckers will do for your single coil spaces...

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

IIRC, the Pacifica 112 has a one-size-fits-all, "swimming pool" pickup rout. In theory, with a suitable pickguard, any pickup permutation should be possible. (For the neck position, humbuckers with short elevator screw lugs would be preferable.)

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

What do you think about putting a SH-6 Distortion in the bridge position and SHR-1 hot rails in the neck?

Would that come close to AJFA/MoP Metallica sound?

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

I couldn't possibly comment. I never listen to Metallica.

Always wanted to try Parallel Axis. But for my 2 cents, Distortion or the Alt 8's should do the trick as far as humbuckers are concerned. For singles, atm, I am in love with the Quarter Pounders. Go with either the flats or staggered. Big noise from both. I have 2 staggered.

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

Let me rephrase since I bunched up Gilly D's panties:

I really think you should rethink the pickup thing. The Yamaha is a very inexpensive (but solid) guitar. The real issue though, is the amp. That Fender, while a tasty little amp, is the limiting factor in your sound. No pup is really going to improve that.

I suggest you save the 150 or so to replace pups and put it towards a better amp.

Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates, or Dime's original ML dean would both sound meh through that. Not saying you can't dial in a decent tone, just that the amp is only going to go so far.

work on your chops, save your money, get a better amp.

And for those of you just throwing out random "metal" pups - seriously, I expect better from here!

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

Agree with Ace. When I saw the title, I thought "why does the guitar model matter? Does it somehow have a uniquely different tone from most other guitars that it influences pickup response??"
When I saw the amp, I thought "It's the amp."

The pickup he used sounds like it did because of his playing style and his personal tone - not the settings on the amp, but how he plays. No two players sound alike. If you played through his guitar and amp, you would not get the same sound he does.

Focus on the things that have the most influence on the sound that will come out of the amp: distortion and EQ. It doesn't matter what guitar or pickups or strings or picks you use as much as the distortion type and EQ curve.

Re: Yamaha Pacifica 112 pickups for metal?

The tone on the two albums you cited is more the product of a parametric EQ than a particular pickup. Most of the high power passive pickups below will put you in that territory. It's then a question of EQ'ing to get that sound. I would replace the bridge pickup first and not worry about the middle/neck if you don't use them. Keep an eye out in our trading post and CL around $40-50 used.

High Power Pickups:
Armstrong M214/M215
BL USA 500XL
Custom
Invader
Dimebucker
Distortion
JB
Gibson 500T
X2N
Megadrive

And changing the pickups won't change the tone?

US-made replacement pickups will change the tone from the Pacifica 112 but your present amplifier is not going to do them justice.

Ideally, your amplifier should be valve (tube). The idea is that the high output pickups drive the pre-amplifier stage into controllable and dynamically responsive distortion.

The Gibson 500T is one of the pickups in my PAC311H.
