Re: Yamaha Pacifica
I caught so much hell for this over at Guitar.com, but oh well...here I go. <opening mouth, inserting foot>
About three years ago, I was at Guitar Center, playing with all the "toys". For kicks, I grabbed a Pacifica 112. It was so light, it almost felt too cheap....BUT....nonetheless, I plugged it in, and started playing. It was perfect. The fretwork was absolutely awesome, the fit and finish on the body was perfect, and it sounded incredible. I found myself cracking up that this $159.00 Yamaha was so good. However, I'm a guy who hasn't played his Gibson Les Paul Goldtop for about 5 years because I MUCH prefer playing my cheap little Fernandes Strat copy I picked as a throwaway to keep at the office for those late night breaks.
In any case, there are a lot of gearhounds who I find a bit annoying with their snobbery. I have no problem with people owning whatever gear they want, until they start bashing some player who owns "less". Then it gets my dander up.
So....for fun, I thought I'd A/B this Yamaha against a $2,795 PRS Custom 22. It was definitely a piece of art. BEAUTIFUL in every way.
But, as I spent close to an hour playing one, then the other, then back....etc., I found myself much preferring the playability and sound out of the Pacifica. My conclusion that day was that if Guitar Center had offered me either one for free, with the condition that I actually had to PLAY and GIG with whichever one I chose (not simply own it as an investment or for resale/collecting value)....then my choice without a doubt would have been...
<drum roll>
The Pacifica.
