YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

Any Yamaha solid body electric fans here ?

I will admit, on my side of the world, (deepest darkest South Africa) the brand (guitar wise) is not one of the top sellers.

Only recently have i become aware of the Revstar series. Long aware of the over-the-top priced SG series of Yamaha.

Is there and Revstar owners here ? Or someone who tested one ?
I am more specifically looking into the P90-driven RS502.

Any info will be great.

Thank you very much all.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

We do have one guy on the forum who us rather well known for liking Yamahas, he'll chime in sooner or later.

I have no experience with the Revstar line, but in my experience with Yamaha is that they make pretty solid guitars, it's just the brand name that scares people away. It might have something to do with their entry level guitars being the same brand name as their higher level ones, or the fact that they make literally everything else in the world. People tend to think they under specialize.

. . . thanks !

I hope so ;)

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I have quite a few Yamaha guitars (mostly Pacificas), but I've never tried a Revstar. I want to, but have never had a chance to.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I just commented on someone else's Yamaha & I'll say it again, they're absolutely fantastic guitars!!! Every Yamaha I've ever played, pretty much in any price range, had great build quality & playability. They don't hold their value very well because like Christopher said the name turns people off. Some people just don't want their guitars made by the same company that makes their riding mower but for this very reason they can usually be had on the used market reasonably cheap...

As for the Revstar's I have played one & they're no exception. However with this particular model I think even if it cost me a little more I'd take a Reverend Sensei 290 over it? It's essentially the same guitar made out of Korina but that's just a personal preference. Plus in all reality Reverend's don't hold their value very well either so you can pick 290's up slightly used for $450-$500 which is in the same general price range of the Revstar's new...

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I'm not a Revstar owner, but I've played a bunch of different models in the past few years.

They are very solid guitars. I have noticed that they are prone to neck dive in the way that SGs are.

In general, Yamaha makes very good guitars, especially those that aren't entry level. The current 500- and 600-level Pacificas are some of the most bang-for-the-buck guitars out there.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I have a handcrafted Yamaha (china-made) acoustic that is purely amazing and is quite on par with my Taylor 414 which is 3x the price... Yamaha does know how to make a good sounding/playing guitar.

Back on topic: I love the looks of these and wish I could get my hands on one to try... I wouldn't hesitate to play and gig these, they look awesome, way better than the SG Imho.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I fell in love with the Revstars first time I saw them. I haven't had a chance to play one, but I hope one is in my future. Just can't decide which model.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I have the RS620, love that guitar, would not change a thing about it. The Yamaha Pickups are fantastic, very well voiced, the craftsmanship are astounding, just an all around great 24 3/4 scale guitar. I have not played the RS502 but if it is anything like the 620 it is certainly a great player.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

I had a chance to test them (cost friendly and also higher end models) twice this year and I must add that I was a little disappointed, on a strictly subjective note so it is not meant to be some a general truth just an opinion.

Revs I tested were okay and well crafted but overall, the feel is not nearly there as they suggest. All the Rev guitars from entry to upper range had some lifelessness, toyness to them. For the price you can find more punch, even in-house.

No I'm not an anti-Yamaha guy, I was a happy owner of some of their guitars before and the BB is one of my fav basses. I wanted a Revstar as I really like the look. After testing some against some other Yamahas around the price range all Pacificas bested them for me even if I'm not a Strat guy.

For a footnote, during testing the Pacifica510V was awesome on the level that started to defy the laws of physics. It's not my kind of guitar but I must admit that it totally dominated the price range among all manufacturers. By far.

Re: YAMAHA Revstar series - RS502

Im not sure my post will be helpful, or relevant... So, sorry, but I wanted to chime in.. I havent played the Revstars, and personally they dont excite me.. But... they are prolly fine instruments.. Ive always been puzzled by the fact that Yamaha and Washburn seem to get so little respect. With Yamaha, I suppose its because they dont spend alot on endorsements and such.. But they make great instruments and have for a 100 plus years.
Also, many of their offerings dont appeal to me since ones some Pacificas they had back in the late 80's early 90s. Washburn, is the same. very little respect, but have been making great guitars for a very long time.

Rant over, we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread
