Yamaha T50 Amp?

Re: Yamaha T50 Amp?

I had a T100. I've also owned a Soldano HR50 and Decatone. Though the schem shows it to be a near-clone of the SLO, it didn't have the richness of the other Soldanos I've owned. It's a cool amps for doing 80s rock and has a nice clean channel but in the end, it wasn't for me.

Also, like every other Soldano I've tried, it didn't play nice with my Line 6 stompboxes in the loop. I've since replaced them with a Yamaha Magic Stomp that works great in the FX loop so there are non-rack alternatives.

My $0.02, IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc.

Thanks Alec, for the cheap price that they are going for on fleabay are they tweakable? When you say richness, how different are they?

I put a depth mod on mine so, depending on what you're looking to do, they can be tweaked.

Though mine had the original power tubes :saeek: (I didn't have a bias meter), I tried swapping the OEM preamp tubes with JJ's--I liked the OEMs better. That said, the Yamaha's tone had an upper-mid hump that sounds more like an EL34 amp. On the plus side, you could dial out the buzz, even at high gain levels. It's quiet (for a high-gainer) and has a nice reverb with separate reverb level controls for each channel.

That said, I couldn't dial in enough lower mids for my taste. I got a great deal on mine so my cost of ownership was zero. It's not gonna give you 100% of that Soldano tone but it's a nifty value-priced high gain tube amp.

Re: Yamaha T50 Amp?

BTW, I just noticed your location. I spent quite a bit of time out your way in the early 90s when I was stationed at Ft. Lewis. :)

I'm a bit southeast of Ft. Lewis, but if you ever came out to the Yakima firing center you were near my home. Who were you attached too?

9ID and 199th SIB. I was with 1/33 Armor in '90 and the 9th CAV 'til '92. I left right around the time the 199th IN BDE was redesignated the 2nd ACR.

Hey JumpMarine,

You might want to check out this link, if you haven't already... in the second e-mail, somebody asks Mike Soldano himself about the T50.

Good link. I've been wondering about those Yamaha amps, too. I think I'd just pay more and get the Soldano. An Astroverb 16 used would cost about the same if you got the Yamaha and then had to change the speaker, put in a choke and change out the reverb. Come to think about it you'd probably end up paying more. Stick with the original. Although Yamaha does make some cool products.

Thing is, the Astroverb is a different beast altogether. The HR and T50 have a lot more gain than the 16 watt Soldanos.
