OK folks,

A JB is going into the Strat...I've had it...I can't deny my 80s c*ck rock roots...and I need to get a JB in this thing so I can get down with my bad ass self...

So here's the dilhema, I need 2 strat pickups to mate up with this thing...

What are my options!?

Just did this! Go for the new Stack Plus noiseless pickups and the JB humbucker for the bridge pickup. Use 250K pots. You might want to add a mini-switch to split the JB into a single coil...I would! I'd also add a blender pot to add/blend the neck pickup into the bridge pickup and bridge into the neck. I'd go: master volume, master tone and blender pot. I just did all this for a customer to his Tom Anderson and it became the best S/S/HB Strat I've ever played. Lew

Lew, mighty cool idea...how do the stack plus's match up with the JB, volume wise?

I assume you need a super-switch to split out the JB and middle coil, when you're in position 4, right?

Re: yeah, it's the "what do I put in my strat" question!

Hey folks, gotta bump this...

I spent a while at Guitar Center this afternoon....playing various HSS guitars...and made a determination that I don't know if I want a JB in the guitar...for reasons that I simply do not want a volume inbalance between the JB and the singles.

I really want to be able to switch to the neck single and solo at the same depth, volume and intensity as I would with the bridge humbucker.

I'm very fearful that putting a JB into the guitar, no matter what the single coils in the guitar...I would have a noticable volume issue.

Can you guys put my fears to rest here?

I played a number of fender HSS strats (with humbucker pickups in the 8-10k range) and they all had the balance I want and need....

Any thoughts?

Re: yeah, it's the "what do I put in my strat" question!

The volume drop between pups doesn't bother me much on a gig. The reason being that when I switch to the neck, I'm usually playing something slower and softer, that is unless I'm giging jazz. Then it usually stays on the neck, so I can just turn up the volume on my amp and forget it. IMHO, sitting in a music store playing Strats might not be a genuine test of whether the setup will work on a gig. Does the music store have a used Strat with a JB setup that you could try on a gig? Just a thought. :)

No, but I've got a friend with a JB and some singles in a Valley Arts, and the difference is drastic enough for me to raise an eyebrow...

If lew says the difference isn't noticable with the stack+ pups, then the stack+ pickups must be rather high output...

Re: yeah, it's the "what do I put in my strat" question!

Valley Arts is definitely a good axe. However, if you don't like the setup, nothing is probably going to satisfy you except getting someone like Lew to put something together for you. :cool2:

Re: yeah, it's the "what do I put in my strat" question!

Hey Frank,
I had a JB in the bridge of my mustang and I just didn't like the tone I got, I used 500k pots and had a duckbucker in the bridge position. I just didn't cut through, if you know what I mean. I picked up a Hot Stack pickup on ebay and it matched up very well with the duckbucker. The duckbuckers still deliver some of the strat sound (even though they're humbuckers) especially out of phase on the 'stang.

Hope this helps,
m.
